mi hear this story pon de weekend

dat back in de days in Jamaica that if a child was left handed they were forced to use their right hand instead
as being lefthanded would make dem evil.

anybady else ever hear such a story

I was one of those kids. It was not proper to use yourleft hand. To this day I can't "hold a knife right".

Nope, not just in Jamaica at all...

"Lefties have long suffered. In India and Indonesia, eating with the left hand is considered impolite. Chinese characters prove extremely difficult to write with the left hand. Not so long ago, teachers slapped the wrists of left-handed American elementary students."

this was common everywhere, not just JA - in previous generations in the US they did it all the time. They still tried to do it to me as late as the 1960's when I was in primary school - but my mom stopped them. Nowadays I don't think it's done much any more.

It's now well-known that the left and right parts of the brain control different things... left-handers are more dominated by the right brain which is the side for music, art, creativity, etc. Right-handers are more dominated by the left-brain, the more analytical side - for maths, science, etc.

The word for "left", in Latin, is "sinister" - that word origin might have something fi do with the old-wives-tale of left-handed as being something "bad"

well fe tell unno the truth mi neva hear of it before....I was very shocked...I have family members who are lefties and they were never told or forced to use their right hand

also in some countries - India was mentioned, also Arab & Middle Eastern countries, people use the left hand fi wipe they behine, so it is totally NOT acceptable to use it for eating, writing, brushing teeth or shaking hands - that is another reason using the left hand might be considered socially unacceptable, or at least "impolite" -

and is a darn good thing mi nah live in any a them places cause I cannot hold a fork or a toothbrush with my right hand atall atALL. I would be a social outcast... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

Actually, I took some beatings and abuse from my father and his family about being left-handed. I learned to eat and write right handed all though I can eat lefty.

The bad part really was that people close to you really believed that it meant that there was something wrong with you. Even not using your left hand didnt really mean that that you were now cured. Far from it... they all knew now that you were just pretending to be one of them. I'd already exposed who I really was... naturally.

Yes, I was one - I still am left handed somewhat - I only write with my right hand everything else I do with my left hand. i.e., if I am fighting the left hand is the first to get you.

My grandmother was a lefty, her teachers would hit her hand with a ruler if she tried to use it in school.

I've had many Jamaican friends tell me that they were "beaten" in school. Right into their teen years. It's so humiliating.

Yes, I was born left handed. Got some serious licks that it is 'bad' to use my left hand. Anytime I used the left I would be told to use my right hand.

Like some other posters, I now use both hands. Even my writing with the right it is slanted as though I was writing with my left hand.
