I remember the block of ice that came from Santa Cruz ice factory via truck and it was kept in a wooden box with wood shavings which kept it from melting. Ice pick was used to chip away for use.

Ah the famous St. Elizabeth red dirt - Usually this is found in southern-most part of St. Bess - Top Hill, Southfield, Treasure Beach, etc.

I remember the dye they used on the floor - barks from the logwood tree boiled until it reached a burgundy like shade. This was used on the floor then polished and then the evalasting coconut brush - man that was a good work out -- after walking on that floor the bottom of your feet were stained -- no wonder people were slim and trim - not to mention that they walked miles everywhere and carried water on their heads from the stand pipe.

Mountain, I was living in the woods on a lake in a cute little log cabin, it was the log cabin lifestyle that brought me there. When it was 50 below the outhouse lost it's appeal though, but there is something to be said for outdoor toliet!

Yikes, the list is long. I was living with a pit toliet untill 10 years ago last month. Before that, I had a hand pump for water and a wood stove for heat, a sauna for a bath.
Around 1990 I let them put in cold running water and I switched to an old gravity fed oil stove for heat cause I worked too long of hours to be chained to the wood stove.

I pioneered a few work related things in my day, I was:

The first woman animal control officer in 2 towns

One of the first women cab drivers in Duluth.

One of the first women constructions workers, I think there were 3 others when I started.

Even women bartenders were controversial when I started bartending back in the mid 70"s.

talking bout bathing outside, when our house was being built in the country, 3 pieca zinc was put up outside and di hose was thrown ova di top of the zinc enclosure fi di bathroom for months..at the time, we didnt even think about the inconvenience. it was fun..just had to be careful of a nosey renkin lil bway who tried one to climb a tree ova him yawd fi watch mi bade ...mi bredda dem stone him and him drap offa di tree an buss im hed ... heehehe . Can yu imagine causing dem north american kids this kind of inconvenience?? yu wud neva 'ear di end of the complaining !
