when i first started reading the story i assumed it was a true story not about Serenity## or whomever, i just assumed it was real, because we've seen it played out on the board and in trip reports 1,359,878.... times and counting.

A speck of sunshine caught Serenity's green/hazel eyes as they wearily opened. She could hear the low but familiar hum of oxygen releasing in controlled burst from the wall, the heart monitors on silent, she was still aware of the sticky attachments on her skin. How long had she been out this time, what was wrong now.

Guuuuuuurlll, you alright?? Though drugged and confused, she knew that voice anywhere. She managed to whisper Lacy's name and cracked a small smile. Hey Lace. You know me, just trying to get a little attention.

They knew the drill. Mom? She's here, Lacy answered. Flew in last night. Kids? Fine, worried of course, mom will bring them when the baby gets home from school. Lacy kissed her old friend on the cheek. Don't worry we'll take care of everything.

Seren had a mild case of Lupus if there was such a thing. It just meant, it wasn't as advanced as some patients and she was in the hospital less frequent than most sufferers of the disease. When she was stressed and worked way to hard, she crashed and needed a constant flow of oxygen, pain management and therapy.

Lacy was her girl, big mouth, but fun to be around. She was the first to introduce her to Jamaica. She knew all her secrets and was her very best friend. Women were so caty, Seren didn't generally make lady friends easily. Lacy just seemed to be in love with the idea of life itself, said what was on her mind and played no games.

They almost never hung out on a regular basis, most times, Lacy was in Port Maria enjoying her new home, new husband and new country. She always showed up, unannounced when Seren needed her most. Seren didn't know how she knew but like clockwork here she was again.

Close call Seren! I done told you gal about this life your leading. That seemed to hit a nerve and Seren began to remember what all led up to this...

It All Happened At Once... She was crying and screaming to the heavens "Why Have You Exiled Me!?! This overwhelming feeling of lonliness hit her like an open hand. It caught her off guard. She tried to tell her mother through blurry tears what she was feeling. Instead of consoling Seren, her mother lashed out and chided her. "Its your fault you moved away from your family and friends." "It's your fault you decided not to date any more men." She told her to be strong, that she would get through this just like she got through everything else. If Seren heard " Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger,one more time, she promised to be charged with attempted murder on the person who said it, to see if they could practice what they preached!

In Janaury she got the notice she was getting laid off, even with the handsome severance pay, she still was in debt. In February, her neighbor called and said "Did you get the notice the complex is being torn down?". We have 60 days to evacuate or face eviction. Then Damon and his madness!! Enough... in the middle of packing, with the grip of lonliness and exhaustion over taking her senses, she felt all the oxygen leave her body. All went black and she woke up with white sanitized sheets and her best friend acting as if everything would be alright.

It is at your weakest time that you start to question the divine plan... "I have no family, they are all in Chicago, I have no friends, no man, no one. I've prayed and stayed true, why have you forsaken me? Now she lay in the hospital, in pain, this was the proverbial icing on the cake! God had abandoned her and she couldn't figure out what she did wrong.

It All Happened At Once... She rested for a month, spoiled as much as a hospital can comfort one in need of mental and physical deliverence. New blood from many transfusions coursed through her body. She always joked, new blood, new personality.

Seren's long brown hair looked like a birds nest, her beige skin took on an ashy hue, the one good thing about being sick is the weight loss. She was 10 pounds lighter and looked forward to buying new jeans that she would evetually bust right through after she began eating again. They never faded and remained on her shelf until the next hospital stay. Though weak inside, she could feel something in her spirit excitedly stirring. Yup, blood tranfusion she joked to no one in particular.

Lacy rolled her out the hospital on a beautiful spring afternoon towards home. One foot on the floor the other on the wheelchair like a skateboard. The nurses just shook their heads and wished Seren all the best.

Seren managed to secure a place before the collapse. Her mom, Lacy, and her now college bound teenage son had moved everything themselves. This would be the first time she saw her new home furnished.

Tahji was first to greet his mom at the door. He was her crowning glory, her joy, the proof of what she had sacrificed everything for. He handed her a manilla colored envelope almost as soon as she walked into the door. Bills Tahji? Goodness I've just arrived home. "Read it mother" he exclaimed, a sly smirk on his face. With the help of Lacy, Seren sat slowly on the couch, pleased by the way, they had furnished the place and seemingly put everything away.

Dear Mr. Massey, it is our honor to inform you that we have accepted your application and are proud to welcome you to Morehouse University with the benefit of a full scholarship for academic excellence. Tears started to stream down her face. Come here little one. He was 6 feet, 2 inches, to her 5 foot 4 inch frame and she still insisted on calling him little one. Her 6 year old little girl Treasure just claped wildly, mimicking the adults around her.

Little did anyone know, Serenity sang a prayer from the time the gift, Tahji, was given to her. Please lord, she sang every night. Make me strong enough to get him through, to make him a good and successful man. I ask no more or less. I ask nothing of my happiness, just serenity in the time I have to spend with him. This had been Serenity's Song for 18 years. She believe she could now die happy. She was tired and unlike Tahji, if anything happened to her, she knew Treasure would be taken care of.

To Serenity, her life was now over and survial would take on new meaning.

btw, on a comment on the story itself try this; "Show, don't tell"

example, dont tell us "Serenity is sad", show her lips quivering, tears welling up in her eyes. That would make your story heaps more effective.
