No worries Sunshinegal..I did finish the book but I never really liked it much..I pushed on because I wanted to finish the first selection and I thought it would get better. I couldn't relate to the characters..felt them to be unbeleivable and even pathetic by the end of the book.
Careys background also seemed unrealistic.. A father who was Muslim, but ordained an Episcoplaian priest, and a mother who was a Jew. The love story seemed forced.. too intense for such a short meeting.. also unbelievable.. and then the killing scene at the last chapter?? What is this Romeo and Juliet? Who shot Carey? I did finish the book. But, it wasn't as good as "Waiting In Vain". Most of the characters were not very likeable.

I shouldn't have read SMS so early because now all that's in my head is Waiting in Vain which I am reading now. But let me see what I remember.

First I know I like WIV a lot more than SMS. It seemed like SMS was written over a long period of time and teh author forgot what happened earlier in the book when he wrote teh rest of it. Some of the plot was not thought through. It had it's moments, but it also had parts where I was thinking "What is he talking about". What really carried this book is the setting. When he talked about Port Antonio and Kingston I knew exactly where he was and could picture everything clearly.

That whole religion plot was pushed a little to hard. And the whole Ghana episode could have been written a whole lot better. And the Jerry Springer style tripple murder suicide at the end was totally un-necessary. I give it a C+

Couldn't get into it, couldn't follow it, didn't like it, didn't finish, will be returning it.

Well no surprise.. though I am waiting to hear from more people.. Sure seemed like lots said they were joining the club..so where the H-ll are all of you? I understand not liking the book.. not finishing.. but for me I was still drawn to conclude it.. Magic.. I loved the setting descriptions as well, having been in Port Antonio and Kingston.. I guess the turn off for me was the whole love affair part. I didn't relate at all.. the intensity came from out of no where..I was more interested Carey's relationship with Kwabena(that the name).. but then that was so disappointing.. Please let me know about waiting in vain because I do want to read that one for comparison..and wait till you read Greenwichtown-DO READ IT.. it's unbelievably good.. a real page turner.. sits in your soul.. now that is a real satisfy the soul book!!!

I did finishe Waiting in Vain!!! It took a while before I got hooked, but Waiting in Vain is much better and I got hooked into it about 1/4 of the way through. Which is one of the reasons that I pushed into Satisfy My Soul, thinking that at some point I would start to care about Frances and Carey - which I never really did....

I have started Greenwhichtown, I have a bad feeling that this book is going to make me cry.....

Does anyone have any suggestions for book number three, so we can link to it???? If no suggestions by Wednesday, I will pick one if that is okay....

Sunshinegal.. doesn't seem like too many are reading this thread... so don't know if anyone will make suggestions for book number three here.. jamaicareamin told me about "It begins with tears" by Opal Palmer Adisa(paperback).. so I was going to read this in JA.. but she read it already.. it looks promising..However.. Greenwichtown moves quickly.. two others have already finished it.. took a couple of days.. this discussion should be a LOT sooner.. No one will need more than a week to read it.. literally.. its not that long and it is that good.. I think we should plan for the first week in April if everyone gets it.. I have no problem with you picking the next selection.. just let me know so I can get it soon...

I will be in Jamaica the first week in April, but if everyone is finished with the book and wants to move the discussion up - that is fine with me. I don't want to make all of the rules....

I just want to make sure that everyone who wants to participate gets a chance...

No, sunshinegal... we will definitely wait for you!!!! Besides I have to ask the author to participate.. but I will only do that if enough people will read the book. It would be emabarassing to schedule her and then have no one show up like this... so leave it April 15.. or whenever you will be back but maybe lets see who will read it.. and then assign # 3 so there is lead time to get the next book in waiting...

I opted out of the first selection, and I've heard from the library that they have a book for me, which is most likely Greenwichtown. So I'll definitely be a part of the second discussion.

Magic, since you are the only one who responded that finshed the book can you explain to me what happened in the last chapter? who killed Carey? his best friend? It was hard to follow.
