I loved this book!! Read it in 2 days on the beach and started it again on the plane home. Brought it back to Negril on my last trip and lent it to another visitor who also loved it. One small nitpick, it's not "Jimmy" Hendrix!!Comment

Read it couple years ago and it ranged from hilarious, corny and tediously boring story, not to mention the constant typos. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
The story could be based on any foreigners journey into the then idyllic settings of Negril during the 70s and the Vietnam War period. Drugs, sex and the desire to own a little piece of Negril and seeing its potential to become a booming tourist town. I'm certain Mark Conklin must get a few "is this your life story", since Banana Shout is indeed the name of his villa/inn/resort.
My husband says the author pretty much accurately described Negril as how it was during the 70s (my husband has been travelling to Negril since '75). Myself a Jamaican who never visited Negril until late 90s, enjoyed that part in the story.
Banana Shout is ideal for a traveller who has not/or has been to Jamaica and would like to get an ex-pats views on life in Jamaica ... Banana Shout is just the book for the moment.
I often time get weary of foreigners rendition of Jamaica and Jamaicans, their stories of coming to Jamaica, ganja, duppies, finding a Jamaican woman who hangs around to keep the bed warm...
I give Banana Shout by Mark Conklin 3 stars.Comment

I enjoyed Banana Shout. I read it thinking, now why couldn't I have done something like that (got a little piece of land and started a business in Jamaica). [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

i am no expert -- never been there except to eat once years ago.
i am not saying they do not welcome jamaican customers. but, i do know they do NOT welcome guests of guests who are jamaican.Comment

Bink, you must have Banana Shout Resort confused with another property. You could not have eaten here because we have never had a restaurant or bar or any food services.
We are a small private resort not open to the public. We rent cottages to Jamaicans
at local reduced rates.
However, we do not allow anyone of any nationality on the property unless they are renters
for security and privacy reasons.Comment

Fair enough explanation and I think most resorts tend to adopt the same policy stated by Mr. Conklin below and since we're not here to discuss Mr. Conklin's policies re his resort but his book Banana Shout ...

How would you compare Negril to what it was when you first got there and built Banana Shout to what Negril is now. The infrastructure, tourism, interaction between locals and ex-pats, the drug culture (ganja and the scourage(sp?) of crack cocaine) in Negril ...

Mr. Conklin I went to the library to order your book and they couldn't find it. I then went to the main library who located it on the computer but it was not in any library here in the city. Whats with this. I went to a affrocentric bookstore and they didn't have it. I am going to order it through Amazon as the others did. Sorry I won't be able to give any input at the moment. I'll have to catch up later. Look forward to reading the book whatever the opinion may be. The descriptions of the resorts sound interesting. Peace...
