Built before the turn of the last century by the French, the Negril Lighthouse has served the people of Jamaica since 1895. It towers 66 feet above the ground level and the light is elevated 100 feet above sea level. The walls are three feet thick and the light flashes every two second and can be seen for approximately 10 miles.
The Lighthouse, located a ways out on the West End Road, past Rick's Cafe, is powered by solar energy. The light was originally fueled by kerosene and then by gas but was converted back in 1985, just a decade before it's 100th anniversary. The Negril landmark still guides ships safely around Jamaica's western edge.
The Negril Lighthouse - a quiet, getaway in Negril. With perseverence and patience, you can see the grounds and even walk to the top! During the day, a spectacular view of Negril awaits, looking back into the country is incredible. But for sunset...one of the most romantic spots on earth.
