What did the winds of March cause?
Those of you who are in Jamaica throughout the windy days of March can recall the popular boyhood pastime of Kite-Flying.
Kites of differnt sizes and designs are often seen hovering way above in the sunny Jamaican skies.
Sometimes the kites get entangled in the power lines and cause short circuits which causes power-cuts.
Kites an omnipresent feature in Jamaica during and after the month of March, the windy month.

What d'ya mean by "boyhood pastime?" [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] Mi used to fly kites tuh. I would help my older brother to build them. Making the frames from bamboo twigs and then buying "pretty paper" and use starch to glue the beautiful colored ones to the frames.

They were small by comparison but they soared to great heights. I remember the "big bajeys" the huge kites that some would put razors on the tail, and they would maneuvre them that the razors would cut your smaller one from the sky. Sometimes wi wudda bawl when wi si wi kite get cut down in the sky. Sometimes we would go where we thought it fell, ongle fi seet hitch hup inah some tree or di odda, well mutilated (tear up) by the "fall."

The longer the tail and the bigger the bow (figget the name) the higher they would go. Dosse were di dayse, oh yyes dose were di dayse. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I use to cook my own paste using flour an I would sqeeze lime juice in de mix. I couldn't afford starch.

So wait Maas Q, yu tink us girls neva fly kite too? Btw, mi tink kite flying was an April hobby(?)

Anyway, mi used to tek bamboo stick and help my brothers, even made my own. One time mi tear off the frilly frilly something off my mother's bedspread for mi kite tail! Mi did get a buss EDIT for that [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Man, yu ever got your kite to fly as high as a John Crow! My kites were pretty amateur though, nothing fancy as my brothers. One time I got my kite going higher and higher and mi start bawl out si mi kite deh, si mi kite deh! Then mi buck mi toe on a piece of rock,~~ouch~~ my kite got away and floated off to netherland. Yep; I was a tomboy in word and deeds. My brother who wasn't very academically inclined was very good with crafts even as a very young child. He used to build dolls furnitures from wood from collecting them to varnishing the finished products. Guess who used to help him? Me of course...bureaus, cabinets, beds, chairs, tables etc....some of what I see sellling now is no comparison to what he did, and I don't say this just because he was my brother (God rest his soul.) He even ran a miniature movie house (exaggeration) with with screen and actors using a lamp and a curtain and the characters cut out of paper...adults would come religiously everynight to watch.

People would marvel at his handwork. Him used to makes skates also from wood, and my Dad would supply supply some small metal wheels (bearings?)...mi nuh membah. anyway mi used to ride those as well racing down Fourth Street (Trench Town).

Mi used to follow him goh a taawndry tuh guh fishing a seaside. Back to the kites, mitink dem used to have kite flying tournaments at Race Course..mi neva guh but a soh mi did hear. Flour was more hexpensive dan starch barosa so wi used starch which my Mom always had nuff nuff for wi used to make it from scratch from cassava.

Laaawd, Sandi, mi memba di scrapsis wi used to use to make the kite tails ~~~Waiee~~~ After a while, when we recognised certain kites in the sky we knew to back off and hold on to our kites and watch those soar to Kingdom-Come.

...sling shot? Yuh mad? Dat was one of our pastimes as well, and anoh bud wi did shoot eida...we used to lick plums off the trees also wid dem. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Beg pardon Madam Ladies, I did not realize how far advanced uni-sex had reached so long ago. Sling shot or bingy, yes. But I loved the life of birds more than to just slay them. I preferred to shoot down those highly perched mangoes.
Remember when they said you had a mango hand?
Meant that when you threw a stone or ball it found its target with ease and witth consistency.
The smaller version of a bingy was the elastic band. Coupled around the index finger and thumb the rubber band when loaded with a paper shot could lick hot hot.

BWOY oh bwoy! you two are hilarious! - I mean Brits an Q. ...Brits, you have really impressed me with your youthful days as a tom-boy which paralells some of my own escapades. But as much as you try, I have to leave you in the dust when it came to boyhood pranks, many of which, I dare not speak of here.

You are right! Flour was "dearer" that starch, but I didn't have to buy it!, just steal it from mi modda behind her back and cook de paste inna condense pan. A tink she did kno dat mi tief it, but shi nevva say nuttn. ...Q, some a dem ladies were definetely ahead of their times. We guys always shared our activities wid dem just as britisha's bredda did with her. We Jamaican boys always fascilitated uni-sex activities with our pastimes, but they didn't want us in theirs. IMAGINE!

Annoda ting Q, I remembered sculling from school to go shoot bud a Trench town in de days when it was mostly bush and macca;(north of seventh St) also sculled and go to Doncaster by the sea and spent all day wid mi fren.(wi hide our books) We had both our parents fooled! they thought we were in school.(DWL) [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] But when it came to stoning mangoes, I thought I was the champ until I smashed the window of a not too close neighbour along my street. Mi glad yuh fine mi funny. Mi is a comedienne in mi own rights. Mi could saw, sandpaper, varnish wood, and of course use the hammer with the cute little tacks. It paid off for I am my own "handi-woman." ~~~Waiee~~ Mi neva ackshally scull fram school; mi nain waan miss di boloslush, or free cheese and whatever else they had to nyam; not to mention the praise and kudos for being an "A" student. Henniways, mi memba when wi used to stray from our direction home, and goh walk dung a King Street. Mi did say dis here before. One day when rain fall and wi followed this girl who allegedly stole her Mom's money (the info came out afta the banga-a-rang) Wi all followed her around for she was a big spender, buying us this and buying us that.

To this day mi memba when she had bought a "white dollie", blue eyes and red hair and all. This day in particular, she brought it to school and it rained. Well barosa di dolly noh fall inah di guttah watah, gushing fiercely from di rain. Yuh shudda si wi a grab aftah di dollie before it went down the drain. Well night fell before wi all got home and the rain added to the darkness. Picture us walking back home from Harbor Street to West Kingston; we all had a baxiding, and the girl had a double whammy when her Mom came to the school. Noh ask if wi baxide nevah bun wi from the caning from the nun...the headmistress when di stori came out; all because wi did licky licky. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

We bway never did ketch on pon de dollyhouse sinting dat girls so lost themselves with.
Though one day as a bway this big girl come to mi yard wid dolly and have me ah serve tea and change dolly nappy.
Mi did glad no other bay did de de....or else yu would neva hear de end of it till dis day.

Since the past 2 days, the wind in Kingston has shifted. Usually it comes in from the sea from the south east in a north west direction. Now the breeze coming off the mountains in a south east direction.
Sandi, when the winds started kicking in early March, the guys, big bway and likkle bway start wid dem kite ting, so they did not ait till April.
The saying goes, March winds, April showers brings May flowers.
To be honest, I don`t see any baby Britisha`s, MountainGals Ackee Girls or Sandis flying kites these days.
Is pure barosas out deh ah fly kite inna de broad daylight.
What has brought about this change?
