Wasn't Islam the dominant religion in sub-Saharan Africa prior to Christianity? In west Africa, Mansa Musa, King of Mali (1312-1337) along with 72,000 people, went on a Hadj in 1324. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure Christiantiy had not enveloped the majority of Africa, except for Ethiopia, at this time. So is this the foolishness that Africans were practicing before Christianity?

I don't know that Islam was the majority religion in Africa before Christianity. I'm not aware of many Africans being converted from Islam to Christianity - most converts were from the so-called "animist" indigenous religions.

I had heard, however, that Islam was the fastest growing religion among Africans in the 20th century.

Islam was practiced in east Africa from the 8th century and from the 9th century in west Africa. Africa is no different from any other region of the world. We have all been influenced to some degree away from our original practices. Here in the UK it used to be Druids until the advent of Christianity. Again the origins of these early belief systems can be found in regions of Africa, Asia, Europe, America and and Australasia. But what people believed was not for them, foolish at the time. It was their belief.

kumba I dont really know if you can call christianity an African religion, because original African culture is based in plurality, all aspects of it. The Asian influence which crept in is clear, one this and one - that just because it is on African soil does not means it belongs there.

Just like a black mother having a mix child does not make the mother mixed but the influences are there.

I agree with Sukana. Christianity was not an African religion or belief. Original beliefs were based on plurality. The advent of Islam through Jihad established Islam in the majority of sub-Saharan Africa. The Portugese brought Christiantiy to Western Africa when they began trading there. Islam is still the major religion in the region, with Christianity and traditional beliefs following behind. The point was made that prior to Christianity people believed in superstition and foolishness. I was just pointing out that prior to Christianity, Islam was dominant. But I would have to add to those who do not follow the beliefs and traditions associated with Islam and Christendom, it would appear that there is superstition and foolishness tied into these religions too.

sorry mountaingal, but these Jihad's were carried out from the 9th century on and the majority of Africans living below the Sahara were forced to take on the Islamic religion. There were numerous holy wars in Africa to convert the people. The last tribe to submit were the Mandinkas in the 14/15th century. However, most incorporated their traditional practices into their Islamic teachings. Possibly one reason why Islam (like Christianity) has differing practices and beliefs dependant on where you reside.
