Majestic peaks enshrouded in shadowy mist is an appropriate description of the Blue Mountains.
Waterfalls spring from the rock along the roadside and hills are covered with farms, jungle, or masses ginger or hydrangea. The world famous Blue Mountain Coffee also originates here. A botanist could lose themselves searching for wild orchids and pondering the towering tree ferns.
There is a lot to see merely driving through the mountains. Be forewarned that the roads are in poor condition. And alternative to driving through the mountains is to take a cab up to Blue Mountain Tours for a downhill bicycle ride. Or go hiking. No better way to view the beauty upclose. On the south side at Newcastle, the Jamaica Defense Forces have their base. You may stop here for refreshments in the mess hall. From here you have an excellent view of Kingston. On a clear day you can see for some distance out to sea.
If you decide to traverse the road through the mountains have a dependable car and a FULL tank of gas. There is little along the way other than personal homes and small pubs. A very picturesque trip, bring lots of film.
