Is speaking patois to newcommers disrespectful

I saw this statement on the board and would like your impressions:

If we only respond in the "P" language as you call it we do not show respect for those who want to visit the island.

Imagine if you wanted to visit a place and those responding to your questions would not do so in a language that you could understand, even though they were able to do so.

Why would it be disrespectful? If a question is posed and we answer in the Empress' Patwa, den all the newcomer has to do is type the following:


"I don't understand, please explain in English. Many thanks". Wah hawd bout dat????

When I first came on board, I didn't understand patois at all so I was always asking people to translate. I think it became a running joke or something... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Last time I offended some for not being specific and calling names so here one of the original comments that was made that got some of this discussion going. I MUST stress that he did apologize and that took guts so don't lynch him:
