9/11: Jamaicans who Died at the WTC

I remember reading in the Gleaner that about 20 Jamaicans died in the WTC on September 11th. This thread is dedicated to their memory. Please post any information you have about them as well as links to sites.

The front page headline in this weeks' Village Voice reads:

"When the Towers Fell, Homeless People Disappeared. Their Friends Are Still Searching. From the Margins Erased"

And the story begins like this:


"Carlos, a tall Jamaican some called Ras, wore his hair in dreadlocks and thoroughly cursed any social worker who tried to move him. When people asked him his problem, he rubbed his goatee and explained that it wasn't homelessness, it was spiritual.

"They all used the World Trade Center as a place to sleep, panhandle, or pass the time before September 11. They all remain unaccounted for. Their friends and acquaintances fear they died when the towers fell, perhaps only a small portion of the still uncounted street people who perished that day. No one papered the city with flyers bearing their pictures. No family members came in with their toothbrushes to identify their DNA. Maybe their families didn't even know where they were. They died in the anonymous way they lived.

there are sadly too many stories like this. Many people who were here illegally worked at WTC (some at Windows on the World) and sadly they too disappeared and were never counted.

I had no idea. There are many who are unaccounted for including some of our own which I am just now coming to realize.

When I read this article from the September 20, 2001 Gleaner, all the emotions came flooding back. I am sorry I will have to take a break from posting. Others, please continue this thread so that these members of our community are not forgotten:

20 Jamaican victims - 3 dead, 17 missing

CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS : Sonnet Edwards, who was listed as being among 17 Jamaicans reported missing in the wake of last week's terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, is in fact alive. Relatives and friends called yesterday to say that Edwards, who worked on the first floor of one of the towers which collapsed, sustained injuries but was alive and recovering at home.

THREE JAMAICANS have now been officially confirmed dead and 17 are missing in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York last week.

The dead have been identified as Neil Hinds and Keith Broomfield. Hinds was a former athlete who was attending a seminar in a building near the Trade Center when one of the towers collapsed and debris crushed him before he could escape. He died in hospital. Broomfield worked on the 110th floor of Tower 1. The name of the third person has not yet been released.

Among the missing are Carol South-Rabalais, who worked on the 90th floor, Tower 2; Michael Parkes, an accountant who worked in the Tower, Michael Richards, 38, an artist who had a studio on the 92nd floor of 1 World Trade Center. A Jamaican firm May Davis Group with offices on the 87th floor of 1 WTC reported one person missing. He was identified as Harry Ramos.

Others reported as missing are Orlando Kesley, David Taylor, Sonnet Edwards, Denise Gregory, Steve Bunning, Kareem Gordon, Owen Bernard and Courtney Walcott. The Gleaner was unable to ascertain the names of the others reported as missing.

Richards worked through the night prior to the attack putting the finishing touches on several sculptures for an upcoming exhibition.

The funeral service for Neil Hinds will take place this Saturday morning at the Prince of Peace Lutheran church in Cambria Heights, Queens. No information was readily available for Broomfield.

Neil Orville Hinds attended Kingston College between September 1983 and June 1988. He was both a gifted scholar and an athlete and represented K.C. with distinction at the annual Boys' Championships and the Penn Relays. After graduating from K.C., he continued his academic career at Excelsior Community College.

Ten years ago he emigrated to the US, eventually settling into a career in banking. It was in pursuit of higher achievements in this industry that saw him as a participant in a one-day banking seminar at the World Trade Center (WTC) on the fateful day, 11th September 2001. The day will forever be etched in the annals of American history, and the destruction of the WTC towers, by unknown foes, as the most disastrous episode ever visited on mainland America

My bestest friend in Jamaica lost her daughter- Denise Sewell-Gregory.
