“I, er, I better go…” she stepped back from him, but he closed the gap and reached out his arm. She tensed but he did not touch her, just allowed his hand to hover. The fine hairs on the back of her arm rose in a stretch to meet him. She swallowed and smiled nervously before stumbling backward and then turning to scoot down the corridor to her room.

Once inside, she pushed the door closed and leant against it, listening to her heart thudding, feeling the imprint of his arms as they’d held her and remembering the warmth of him beneath her cheek. Michelle buried her face in her hands and muttered over and over, “What are you doing?”

Her hands left her face to press lightly into her stomach. She had no business thinking about anyone now. Not when she hadn’t fully thought out what she was going to do with baby she carried and the man who did not want it.

“Mama.”

Aunt Myrtle glanced over her shoulder and with a slight nod indicated that Dean could approach her. She sat on a chaise lounge in the parlour, facing the narrow windows that still had the heavy drapes fighting the natural light. Dean, on coming closer saw that she was reading.

“Yuh need fi put awn some light man, dis wi gi yuh bad eyes.”

“Nuh worry bout dat,” she said, closing the book with a sharp snap. “How it go today?”

“Well,” he began, taking a seat across from her. “Afta mi drop yuh awf dunga Miss Elsie, mi an Paulie decide fi tek a trip dunga Junior dem.”

Aunt Myrtle did not look at him, but her cocked head and nods indicated that she was paying close attention.

“We pull up an wi hear nuff nize, like dem a try hide, people a run een side an lock door an hush dem one anedda. We neva gwan no way still. We jus go up to de door an mi nat even badda knock, caw dem dun know a who did out deh aready.

“No baddy ooden come to de door. So mi jus say, loud enough fi dem hear an dat dem totally undastan whe mi a say, mi say: “Mi a gi oonuu one week. Mi wi drop by maybe nex Friday or Satday. Laas chance.” An wi lef.”

He waited while Aunt Myrtle digested this. Still not looking at him, she asked, “Yuh a go tek Paulie back wid yuh when yuh go back?”

“Yeah, im say im wi come. Im nah refuse money man.”

She nodded. “So whappen afta dat?”

“Well, we tek a run dunga Maas Tyrone. Mi lef Paulie eena de cyar an decide fi go talk to dem pon mi own. Fus off all, Maas Tyrone im come out side widout im teet an wid one lass-”

Aunt Myrtle’s eyes flew up. “Im draw lass affa yuh?!”

“Well, im neva draw it per se, but im did have it eena im han. Mi tink im whenna try sen subliminal message. Aldoa wha kina message im couldan sen wid dat deh look dull an rusty an fulla more hole dan straina, mi no know…

“Anyway, im stawt talk bout im no waa mi pon im propaty. Bout mi fi lef. Mi a trespass. Nex ting yuh know, Ms Bertie she come out, har big tittie dem neahly knock im ova-”

“Have mannas!”

“- an come tan up out deh. Den she stawt bawl affa mi bou mi fi come outta dem yawd an how dem a go a dem lawya nex Monday an how dem a go sue yuh fi harassment an inveeglement or supm, mi cyaa even memba whe she say.”

Aunt Myrtle’s lips tightened and she dropped her eyes again. The muscles in her jaw worked and her thin fingers bothered the edges of her book. Dean said nothing and leant back on the uncomfortable chair. He glanced lazily around the room. God, how he hated that room. The first thing he’d do as soon as he got the house, was have a big fire out back and burn every ___ thing in that room. And he’d be starting with the pictures.

“So she a chreatn mi wid lawya. Well.” Aunt Myrtle’s fingers settled and the muscles in the jaw stilled. Dean glanced back at her and waited.

“Yuh did good boy. Good. Yuh pay Paulie?”

“Yeah.”

“Good. Aright den. Mek it res fi a minute. Mi wi tell yuh whe mi waa done nex.”

Chapter XII

It was late, but it was not yet dark. The evening though, had a heaviness to it; a sense of the desultory. One found thoughts of intimacy was creeping up on them and taking hold. Until all other matters of living, the mundane day to day decisions became secondary and then came not at all. It was so with Aunt Myrtle as she wandered about her boudoir. Her hands trailed on the familiar surfaces of her armoire, her dressing table, her sofa and her Queen Anne chair. Her fingers caressed the poles of her canopied bed before flitting across the screen of the netting.

She parted the curtain and sat down slowly on the bed, one hand going to her throat, the other stopping just at the top of her thigh. Her fingers became heavy and pressed and the sensation, coupled with the mystique of the Jamaican evening transported her back to a time when she would not have been stuck in a luxurious room all on her own. She could not tell if the throb came from the tips of her fingers or from the softness of her thigh. In truth, she did not care. She wanted to forget where she was and what she’d become. She wanted to go back to the time when the world was hers.

Jamaica 1953

The air was sweet with the perfume from the fruit trees and musk of the earth. The rain had ceased going on two hours now and the sunlight danced through the leaves and over the young vibrant faces of Myrtle, Mary and Sarah. They giggled and fussed with each other’s hair and clothing. It was impossible for them to remain still. In addition to the fragrant air about them, their ladylike perfume and infectious enthusiasm made the very atmosphere happy.

They were going to a party. Finally, Mama was allowing them to go to a party and the best part about it all, was that they were going to be escorted by boys! They squeezed each others gloved hands and fairly shook with glee. Mama watched over them with a suitably stern expression, while inside she worried if it was too soon to give them this much freedom.

Myrtle the eldest and looking beautiful and refined in her pencil slim tubular skirt, form-fitting button down blouse firmly tucked into her nylons and elegant pumps and gloves to match, assured their mother for the last time that she would watch over her sisters. The boy that would be escorting her was from a good respectable family. Mama knew his parents so that assuaged her worry somewhat. This boy was bringing along a friend to partner with Mary. At only 17, she’d only just managed to make the cut-off for being escorted with a boy. Sarah, unfortunately, was still only 16. Much as she’d cried, pleaded, argued and cajoled, her mother had stood firm. She would not be partnered. She could go to the party – though even that was now at risk! – But at her age, young ladies of a certain quality were not allowed to go out with boys – Chaperoned or not!

Sarah had given in, ungraciously it was true, but she’d realized that she was in jeopardy of losing out completely. And why should Myrtle, at only 18, be in charge when she was only two years older? Mary, with her usual sweet nature, had campaigned on her younger sister’s behalf. “Please, Mama. Please allow her to come with us. You know how she loves to dance. She’ll have such a good time dancing, she’ll forget about everything else!”

Now Sarah and Mary in their full-skirted and sharply tucked in blouses nodded anxiously and impatiently – they would heed Myrtle. Please, they just wanted to go! Their dates were here in their shiny blue Lincoln Continental.

In the back seat of the car Sarah and Mary adjusted their full dirndl skirts and sought to make room for Mary’s partner. He settled next to her and adjusted his narrow tie. All the while they stole quick penetrating glances at him while they their gloved hands squeezed each other in delirium. He was just delicious, Sarah decided. Him with his curly hair parted off center and greased to a high-gloss. The high forehead was clear and aristocratic Mary thought romantically. His straight nose was so beautiful that Sarah wanted to reach over and run her finger along it. A glance between sisters confirmed that they had hit the jackpot. It was made all the sweeter that Myrtle, sitting up front with her partner, did not appear as happy. He wore a white zoot suit and its wide brimmed felt hat remained angled on his head. He would not remove it even though it awkwardly bumped and jostled for room with the side door and ceiling of the car.

Myrtle’s date was a pleasant young man. The sisters had known him forever. He was in no way romantically interested in Myrtle, but his parents had insisted that he ask her to the party and Myrtle’s mother had been insistent that her daughter accept. All that pressure hadn’t been necessary really, for pragmatic Myrtle, at 18, knew that the time for her to marry was fast approaching. She needed someone suitable, and what could be more suitable than a boy, two years older, whose parents were imminently respectable members of their community and who had land?

True, he was not, as evidenced by his suit, the most self-aware person – God! Myrtle gritted her teeth, who wore drapes in this day and age? Hadn’t they been banned? Weren’t they out of fashion going on ten years now? Was it his father’s? – But there had not been any rumoured liaisons between him and any of the young girls around. And that was very important to Myrtle.
