“Look. I’on know you. I’on know the woman in the other room. My Mom, for whatever reason, decided that this is where I needed to stay while I’m here. Personally, I’d rather she’d made reservation for me at some hotel or something cause I do not need this [censored]. I don’t know what all the attitude is for, but I’m tired of it already. Ok? I may have to be here for a while, and I’m not going to be hanging out with all this mess. Got it?”

Nicey wrenched her arm free and turned her formidable frame to face Michelle head on.

“Likkle gal doah touch. But a whe de…??? Yuh a go jus come awn yah like yuh a wha??? Queen a Sheba??? A come tell wi how it go??? Look. Mek mi tell yuh fram now. Nobady nuh waa yuh yah. Nobady nah go care if yuh go, so galang. Lef. Cawse if yuh believe say yuh a go tan yah an gwan like caw yuh a farina, wi a go ben ova backwad fi yuh, yuh got a nedda tink coming!”

She glared at Michelle before moving from the room. Her parting shot, “Mi ongle hope yuh undastan whe mi say, caw nobady no ha time a try hemphasise henglish fi yuh maaga raaas!”

Michelle called after her, “I didn’t get that! Do you mind saying it all again in English, if that’s not asking too much?” A slammed door somewhere down the apparently never-ending hallway, greeted her facetious request. She closed the sturdy door of the small room and noted wryly that the lock was busted.

Inside the room, she moved to the narrow bed and sat down wearily. Her stomach was so upset. That had only been her second time on an airplane she was fast beginning to think she did not have the stomach for air travel. Audley’s doubtful driving skills, the darkness of the rooms, the sharpness of the scents and the animosity of the women were all combining to make a lethal irritant to her uncertain stomach. She flopped back onto the bed, her hands on her concave stomach and pursed her lips while she tried to take in long deep breaths. In the meantime she surveyed the room.

There was a narrow old wooded wardrobe that was stationed behind the door. Michelle thought there was probably some financial value to the piece, she was sure that it was what her Mom would call an antique. But if there was value to it, then it bore the distinction of being unique in the room, for everything else, the little there were, were cheap and rickety. She shifted on the bed, the lumpy matteress emitting a musty odour and looked about the room further. On the other side of the door, there was a Formica dresser, with a broken spotted mirror. The Formica paneling on the sides had begun to strip and Michelle made a mental to not snag her clothing on it. In front of the dresser there was a small stool that looked to be in OK condition, but she cynically assumed that it was probably missing a leg.

By the narrow window that was nearer the bed and directly across from the door, there was wooden bench, rough hewn and irregular standing. The narrow window had a worn out gauze curtain that moved slightly with the breeze.

Michelle sighed and stared straight up into the ceiling, hardly noticing the single light-bulb that hung from electrical wiring and that hand a dirty thin cord hanging next to it. She started to laugh at the sheer incongruity of the room as it related to the rest of the house, but her laughter became a yawn and she fell quickly into a deep dreamless sleep.

Chapter VI

He was groaning, his breath coming in short bursts, his eyes squeezed tight shut. Every muscle in his face, it seemed, was at work, straining to contain his intensity, his pleasure, his passion. His forehead was shiny from the effort it all took and from the heat of the room. Still he moaned and thrusted, his powerful arms on either side of her, leveraging himself above her, for maximum effect and the best view. She watched him as he fought for control, as he enjoyed her. She lifted her arm languorously – it was as though it was all happening under water, but she liked it! - and brushed the muscles that flexed in his arms and across his chest. Her fingers came up to touch the sweat that pooled at the hollow of his neck. This move was his undoing and his groaning became a growl as he told her with words she couldn’t hear that he was coming. She closed her eyes, finally, and arched her back in anticipation. The pounding intensified until it became an irritant – like slaps and thumps, like fists against a door. Her eyes flew open.

Someone was pushing their head inside the room, a child, looking askance. Michelle raised herself to her elbow, disoriented.

“Yuh neva hear mi a knock? A long time mi a knock eno! Aunty Myrtle say yuh fi hurry up an come fi dinna.” The youth smiled shyly and pulled the door closed. Michelle flopped back onto the bed and swallowed a groan, tasting the staleness of her breath. She’d forgotten she was here. “Oh Eric,” she whispered allowed, “I miss you so much.”
