She lay on her back watching the muted light of the night play across the ceiling. She was tired and drained. She was thankful that she’d finally found or was directed to the nearest bathroom by Ryan and so was able to have the shower she’d longed for.

Michelle replayed the day’s events. So much had happened in less than 24 hours! She’d learnt so much but she was also aware that there was much more to be learnt. Anticipation gave her goose bumps. She slept.

The house was quiet. Nicey was still as she listened to the creaking and the settling of the old house grow quieter and fewer. She glanced over at Audley. He muttered something illegible, scratched his arse and then tucked his hands beneath his head – all while he slept. She watched him for a moment longer and when he did not move, she gingerly swung her legs from the bed. She paused and held her breath. He slept still.

Nicey rose cautiously from the bed and carefully placed her feet on the wood flooring so as not to disturb the planks that were prone to creaking. Once out of the room she moved a little bit quicker, glancing about her carefully in darkness. The doors all leading off the narrow hallway were closed and no sound came from behind them. Aunt Myrtle, the boys and Michelle were sound asleep. Nicey opened a door that led to a walk in pantry. She went through that and opened the door that led to a short open area that led to yet another door. This door she pushed opened, stepped inside and closed behind her. She smiled at the mound beneath the bed.

“Who dat?” Dean asked groggily.

“Shh,” Nicey said mockingly. “Like yuh kno dun know a who.”



Chapter VIII

There was a timid knock on her door. Michelle rolled over and debated whether to answer. When she knock came again, she called out, “Yes?”

“Is me, Ryan,” the child called out. “Aunty Myrtle want yuh.”

Now? Michelle wanted to ask. What time was it? Instead she said, “Aright. I’m coming.”

She rolled out of the bed and swung her feet to the ground. The wood floor was cold beneath her feet and she curled her toes in reflex. The sky was lightening and she knew it had been for awhile, since she’d lain awake in bed for the last hour. They rose early in this house. Even the children. But someone else had risen before everyone else. It had been the wee hours of the morning when she’d heard the quiet clicks of doors closing. She’d shrugged it off as a late-night bathroom visit.

Now she gathered her toiletries and made her way to the bathroom. Nausea was faint and she hurriedly squeezed some toothpaste onto her finger and stuck in her mouth. She allowed it to settle on her tongue and for her saliva to pool about it. Her headache returned with a vengeance and she prayed that she would not encounter anyone on her early morning bathroom room. Her prayer was not answered.

“Hm hm,” Nicey said.

Michelle debated whether to swallow and say good morning, but decided against it when Nicey continued. “Yuh a get up dem time a day yah a gwan like yuh a Queen Elizibet. Tan an deh an tink say dat de dollyhouse a go laas fi long.”

She walked off, obviously proud of her parting shot. Michelle would’ve rolled her eyes if she cared enough. What was with the comparatives? And what was her hang up with Queens? A mildly confused Michelle entered the bathroom to do her ablutions.

Michelle found Aunt Myrtle sitting on the verandah. Her aromatic mug of mint tea caused Michelle’s stomach to respond in appreciation. Aunt Myrtle cast her eyes derisively at the sound.

“If yuh hungry, go find de kitchen. Everybady mek dem own tings a mawning time an gawn bout dem bizniz.”

Michelle smiled wanly and sat gingerly on the seat next to Aunt Myrtle. She stared straight ahead and said nothing, recognizing the tension that was already starting to build. She sighed inwardly.

After an interminable period, Aunt Myrtle said, her lips just above the rim of her mug, “So yuh cyaa say Mawning? She no teach yuh mannas?”

This time Michelle sighed aloud. She then turned to Aunt Myrtle, smiled and said clearly, “Good Morning Aunt Myrtle. How’re you doing this morning? Beautiful weather, isn’t it?”

About to take another sip, Aunt Myrtle paused and regarded her grandniece suspiciously. “Mawning,” she responded after a lengthy pause, then resumed sipping her tea.

Michelle resumed sitting forward with a small smile playing about her lips. The next words from Aunt Myrtle caused her smile to falter and curled in confusion.

“So she know?” Aunt Myrtle asked, staring straight ahead, the mug still just below her lips, the steam rising up to caress her face.

“Huh?” Michelle asked in confusion.

“Yuh madda. She know say yuh pregnant?”

In the back of the jeep, Michelle sat squeezed between the children. Nicey and Audley rode up front. The only sounds in the vehicle as it dashed around corners and threw rocks, were the young voices as they argued as to who was better – Wolverine or Cyclops.

“Cyclops cyaa do nutn,” Ryan yelled, twisting over Michelle to shout in his young brother’s face. “Ongle ting is im yeye dem can shoot fyah. An im affi a wear dawkas all de time. Eediat powa dat!”

“Well Wolverine cyaa even do dat!” Sheldon screamed, his voice trembling with tears. “All im can do a jump all ova de place like bullfrog!”

“Yah eediat!” Ryan sneered. “A caw im have wolf eena im mek im can jump so. Yuh nat even know nutn. Plus fi im bone dem mek out a adamantium. Cyaa brok. Awhoa.”

While they yelled about her, their parents said nothing, one staring out the side the other staring straight ahead. Michelle said nothing either, hardly aware of the way their small bodies pressed into her, pinching her skin and crushing her blouse. All she could think of was the verbal blow she’d gotten from Aunt Myrtle.

“What? What?” Michelle had jumped up, horrified and frightened. How did she know? Who told her? “That’s a lie!” Michelle had yelled, her heart beating so hard she was dizzy from it. Her headache had increased exponentially.

“A nuh me yuh need fi try convince. Obviously yuh mumma no know. Cawse knowing she, she oodn did sen yuh dung yah fi shame har.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Michelle felt herself pleading. “I-I’m not! Look at me? I can’t even gain weight. I haven’t gained weight. Wouldn’t I be fat or something? I’d have a belly…”

Aunt Myrtle hissed her teeth scornfully. “Yuh mussi tek mi fi eediat. A lang time mi deh bout. Mi can tell when smaddy a breed. Yuh naffi a show. But as soon as de belly stawt push out, mi wi able fi tell yuh a whe yuh a go ha.”

“I’m not,” Michelle said again, less forcefully. She sat suddenly, one hand grasping the seat, the other pressed into her belly. “Really, I’m not. I’m just suffering from jetlag.”

“Oh, a dat dem a call it now-a-days?” Aunt Myrtle derided. “All mi waa yuh fi know is: mi nah no time a walk backa yuh a ketch yuh up if yuh stawt faint faint. Cawse mi know say a so oonuu farina ‘delicate’. Mi nat even waa know if yuh si docta yet as long as yuh know say dis is not de place fi come look docta. An mi waa yuh fi know say yuh a go tek time lef faas before yuh go decide fi drop it yah.”

“Look,” Michelle snapped, standing up again. “I’on need anything from you, ok? I’m just here cause my Mom’s sick. I’m just supposed to look at some land, which I did yesterday, thank you very much for asking, and which I don’t see what the big deals about either, and I’m supposed to get some papers or something. Other than that, I’on need nothing from you, ok? Actually, as soon as I can, I’ma get a hotel room somewhere…”

“Gwan den nuh,” Aunt Myrtle chuckled, genuinely amused. “Galang. No mek mi tap yuh. Hope yuh have enough money.”

That whole money thing again. Michelle was almost gnashing her teeth. She strode to the door and pushed it open, almost hitting Nicey who was on her way out. Of course, the prerequisite snarl followed.

“Oh for God’s sake!” Michelle cried out and pushed by her to storm inside.

“So a wrang wid Princess Diana now?” Nicey asked, staring at her retreating back.

“Mek yuh nuh go ask har?” Myrtle shrugged.

“Mi an she no eena nutn,” Nicey said.

“Well, Audley say im a go somewhe tiday. So mek sure yuh galang wid im. Tek de pickney dem an tek har to. Dean a go cyar mi go up so.”

“So why wi cyaa jus lef har here den?” Nicey groused.

“Cause wi might haffi come back unexpect. An mi no want har eena mi bizniz.”

So now Michelle sat in the back of the jeep, her mind in a turmoil. Not even the jostling of the kids and the speed of the vehicle could get through to her. All she heard was Aunt Myrtle’s words ‘Yuh madda know say yuh pregnant?’

Michelle buried her face in her hands, terror begging her to bury her head. Maybe this was all a bad dream. She’d wake up any minute now. God, nobody was supposed to know!

“Yuh aright? Eeh? Yuh feel sick?” Ryan shook her and slowly she raised her head, forcing back the bile and the fear. She managed to nod her head and smile sickly. That was enough for Ryan who returned to his presently favourite topic.

“Wolverine come fram Canada, nuh chroo? Im live roun yuh?”

Michelle burst out laughing, grabbed Ryan’s head beneath her armpit and planted a kiss on top of his head. Sheldon looked askance while Nicey regarded them through the rearview mirror and scowled. “Ryan sit up! An tap de blastid nize back deh!”

Ryan struggled out of Michelle’s grip and grinned at Sheldon triumphantly. “A did tell yuh!”

Michelle laugh ended on a sob. Her predicament, the one she'd sought to bury for only a while, returned to taunt her. What was she going to do?
