In colonial Jamaica there was a stigma attached to the use of patois, until one woman arrived on the scene and started to make a difference. She used this patois as a language, a looking glass, a club, rib tickler, a prologue satiring a society, a plea of a young nation daring to be free to venture into the unknown.
She took the language of the streets into the stratosphere of the society, she amused, tillilated, taught, bludgeoned and befuddled and always with a smile and within a life time the stigma of patois, was removed and the and the dignity of a dialect was entrenched.
The end product of one woman who knew that one person can make a difference. She has contributed much to our culture, broadened the international face of our image, and still remains our sweet motherly – Miss Lou.
