Now now now. Years gone by and god knows how many times I have been tempted to use the word nayga in dialogue because it is part of me culture [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] me refrain from doing it out of respect that some a ayu touchy bout it. Mind you, I was very understanding. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] It was pure torture not to be able to express meself freely [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Over some months now, me see people come wid many forms of the Ebonics variation.
Niggaz, niger and the like. If ayu accept dem deh, ayu ago haffu accept ayu own patois variety or me Lesser Antillies Creole [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
Well from now on, ayu ago haffu get used to me vocabulary cause me naa hold back me chat.
nyaga mean people to me, it is harmless, everybody a nyaga - black or white, big or small.

I remember my granny using that word all the time. She never meant it in a nice way. In fact, it was reserved for what she considered the lowest class of life.

I think this word may have a very different meaning in Jamaica than it does on your island. It is not at all the equivalent of the way African Americans use "niggah," but a reference to someone who is very boisterous, troublesome, and undisciplined. And it very definetely has racial overtones associated with it. It's very rare a white person is called nayga in Jamaica.

Wa make yu feel different when smaddi say niggah dan when dem say nayga? In fact many African Americans rail up de same way when smaddi say niggah same way like some of us when smaddi say nayga. Is there no racial overtone in niggah?
Maybe we should gain some distant to the word after all. Maybe if it use pan de same smaddi dat use it - it becomes neutral. Not forgetting how African-Americans came to embrace it.

Maybe if you read the thread by Evanovitch that inspired mine you would have known in what context I was using the word.

And just maybe if you read the article I posted then you would probably examine the context in which *you* use the word.

man i read blugiant thread, read Evanovitch thread and read your thread. if yu never noticed one African on ya did ask that blugiant change the title of his thread and that was ignored. now there is more of it.

It would be inappropriate for someone of my complexion to use either word. I rarely find it necessary to use such words.

In the USA, African Americans often call each other "niggah" in a comraderly fashion. I have never heard Jamaicans use "nayga" that way. You see, niggah is a derogatory term for a black person in general. Nayga is not -- it refers to very specific behaviors that are associated with "black" behaviors.

Unless the usage of nayga has changed significantly over the past few decades, I don't think anyone, noh eben ole nayga, a goh put up wid yu call dem nayga eena Jamdung. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

P.S. For the record, I don't associate any behaviors with color. But let's not fool ourselves, most Jamaicans certainly do.

When Jamaican police can abuse their own people they are put to maintain law as against in Britain or America where if the same was done by the police on a minority the call on racism is profound. The issues that make a whiteman police abuse a blackman civilian is insulated into a racial thing as against where in Jamaica its same race abusing same race.
The reasons why a whiteman police beat a blackman civilian do not neccessarily always mean that there is a racial hatred involved in the abuse.
It can be a weilding of power, an abuse of power.
It doesnt mean there is a racist involvement always when black and white conflicts occurr.
To back this up, white police maybe abusing white civilians too in America and Britain.
A manifestation of abuse of power rather than an abuse of race.
