Yes that is how the real English does it and it is carried under the arm.

Maybe that is why in Jamaica back in the days, salt (cod) fish used to be wrapped in newspaper when bought from the local grocery shop

sometimes it's still wrapped in newspaper today. though you may find it wrapped in brown paper at other times...
it the supermarket it is properly labeled and wrapped in that thin plastic wrapper with the foam bottom.
