Well, I will make an attempt to respond here...with limited time. I have read and re-read this several times today , trying to decide just what to say to this. I suspect anything I may say will not be met with an open mind by all participants, but here we go:

Let me respond to this -

It is absurd to describe a group of religions as demonic, and one that belongs to the Devil/Satan, when they do not subscribe to the notion of the existence of the aforementioned. In other words, it is difficult to worship something or someone that you don't believe in. Gross generalizations are not appropriate.

I agree, my limited knowledge of what Obeah is, doesn't include what I read in the link GB provided.

GB, I hope you noted the original author of the reference to "demonic cult." That was an ex cellent link you posted btw; there is a lot to be learned from it, including what's linked under "social sciences."

Now, getting back to the word "cult" It is sooo amazing that of several definitions available, a honest boardite would select the one that satisfies his agenda.

A cult is according to my dictionary, "Obsessive devotion or veneration for a person, principle or ideal" the perfect description of Obeah, myalism, Pocomania or any of the other balm yard worship

Look at #3...would you say that this could describe Christianity and it's practices? Meaning, could Christianity be called a cult using this definition? Somebody is either selecting words, the meaning of which are not clear to them...and the definition given could ALSO be used to describe some Christians, so who has the last laugh here?

The Obeahman/woman is a sole practitioner [IMHO again primarily because of the laws against it] in his or her business...again the original tradional meanings have been lost, thanks to colonialism, and all we are left with is a tainted version..suh mi noh si where smaddi can call dis a cult..even if we use def. #4, no Obeahman innah him right mind claim exclusivity in curing any disease..

Xianity more fits the description given here..and Jim Jones and Guyana comes to mind.

When intolerance rears it's ugly head, this is usually what happens; people paint themselves into a corner..and oftentimes end up looking stupidier by the moment. In other words, the very argument they use to condemn what others believe [in this case religious beliefs] usually turns around and bite them **chuckle***leaving them in an even worse state of confusion.

The obeahman in Africa is/was always a sole practitioner. Every village has at least one. This has nothing to do with colonialism.
He is indeed a specialist. I don't see how obeah could ever be classified as a religion either, it surpasses that.

If we don't know what the obeah man should know, how can we make assumption that he(the obeahman) does not have any knowledge left?

And even if they put the bible or islam or budha to obeah use, they need to work with the belief systems of the people that they are dealing with - and rightfully so.
