Good kwestian, the black community here is not happy with the description and it is there that I first became aware of this linguistic fiasco. The sad fact is also, there are white ppl who are also described as refugees in their own country. I am sure that doesn't sit well with SOME of them either.

How can you be called a refugee when you are a taxpayer in your own country? This really takes the cake!!

Clearly, certain descriptions are reserved for black ppl, however they are caught napping this time...

Anyone that has left the Hurricane area, in advance, during or after the hurricane, and have done so because of the hurricane -- they are refugees, plain and simple.

The dictionary says "especially an individual that has left his or her country." Note the word "especially." It means that it "especially" means this IN ADDITION to the previous meaning, "a person that seeks refuge."

A refugee can seek refuge at the house next door -- he's still a refugee.

And if we're going to call Africans refugees, it is racist NOT to refer to Americans as refugees. And if Americans are ashamed of calling them refugees, then perhaps it's time Americans got off their baxsides and did something to make sure Americans were never more refugees, instead of trying to redefine the damn word to mean something it doesn't!

I have read these posts and I am very sad. Who the hell cares what they are called they are God's People lets just help them.

I do not see the point of getting upset because someone a white or black or black or white person said something that is not viewed as politically correct.

Looting is taking things that you do not need for your survival, regardless of the colour. Items for survival are clothes, food, water, medicine....not T.V.'s

Why is it I have not heard anyone say that Jesse Jackson is an idiot? Certainley a polotician's words have more importance then reporters who do not influence people or future generations with the same magnatude poloticians do.

We are a nation that has sent their young to fight for others in a country where we are not welcome at all times yet our people, our black, brown, yellow, green and white children have gone to help others.

Yet Jesse sits there and mentions things that he knows will incite negativity, and then has the gaull to ask if Bush thinks God is pleased with him.I think God is smart enough to know that Bush is just a twit and a puppet, but what's Jesse's excuse. Does anyone think that at this time while our people, God's people are dying that we really should sit and point fingers and decide what the correct words are to describe the people. That are suffering.

The last thing that I want my children to see is this as a racial thing or the importance of labels. They are humans that need everyone's help.

Please feel free to discuss and critisize what people are doing that's wrong. But please never forget that people of all colours and ethnic backgrounds come here. Please use your intelligence that I know you possess to realize that the last thing that any place especially a place where our children live in somewhat harmony need is to focus on anything other than the real issue. Helping man kind.

I'm sorry in advance for those that I offend with my words and I apologize in advance for those that will want to take a part what I say and turn it into some thing that it is not.

I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to vent my frustrations.

Of course, but if that were to happen in a hurricane and your neighbour come to you seeking shelter, would you refer to him as a refugee or say that is my neighbour who is seeking shelter at my house? Huh?

the only thing that keeps me going right now is that american ppl are arising and helping. cannot rely on goverment, so the ppl are doing this. and, i hold on to that fact. americans are kind, lovely ppl.

On sky news this morning they were describing the people as refugees it said it in big bold letters,just about every news and media sources are referring to them as refugees,why is it so hard for some Americans to accept that refugees can happen in america too.

It would seem to me that deriding the use of "refugee" is counter productive to African Americans. I mean, what better way to shame the rest of America into correcting the racial inequalities in our society.

Most Americans really think racial inequality is a minor issue that doesn't effect most blacks. They think that the south has become, if not a bastion of racial equality, at least a tolerant place where blacks are treated well. Mek dem know dem treat yu so well, yu hafe tun refugee eena fiyu hown country deh.

I think this is the twist that they were trying to give it on KissFM on Sunday. Speaking of the War on Powerty in America with so many being refugees from said war..if only the media at large was sharp enough to pick this up.

Perhaps the media are smart enough. Perhaps that's why they keep using the word refugee. If they admit it, it would lose its credibility. Perhaps.
