That was great and informative. You have lots of knowledge about music. My favourite period is the mid-seventies roots/rockers era, especially when D Brown was at his recording peak. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] (I'm still skanking to everything )and with the exception of Janet Kay, 15/16/17, Brown Sugar, Louisa Mark and maybe one or two more, the UK vocalists really didn't sing very well. And Victor Romero Evans? "At The Club" has to be the WORST thing ever. Sorry. I heard some horrible tunes on the radio today. Shameful. I still find UK Lover's too dreary,..."My man has left me/he's gone/I need a man" etc. though some of the tunes have a nostalgic value to me. No offence intended, but gimme some Dennis, Marcia,Gregory,Alton,Big Yout,Wailing Souls, Junior Delgado, Wayne Wade et al anytime.

As I mentioned before on this site, when mi a picknie, mento artists would serenade Kingstonians at streetcorners near Kernashum maawkit, religiously on Saturdays with Mento wid songs like "Tek mi tuh Jamaica whey di rum cum fram."" "Ole fowl dead in di maawkit..mi noh kill nobaddi but mi husband." Wi cyaan talk bout wi music and leff hout mento..edited to add..MENTO WAS THE FORERUNNER.

As for sound systems and dance halls, dem no mek no mention of V-Rocket eida one of the most master blasters when it came on to sound [si how much dem know]..

...and as far as *ME* is concerned, I maintain that the first rappers came out of Kingston..Mi noh think them copied anniting as one of the articles suggested; if anniting dem copied US.

Mi memba when Stitchie used to bawl hout pan di mike fram nearby dancehalls. Mi clearly memba when deejays used to sing: "yuh I love and not anadda you may change but I will nevah"..and di famous "aaah ah haah" emphasis on the "haah." some wudda bawl hout "Alcapone guns don't argue.." etc etc.

..den dere was nuttn "raucous" about Ska so to speak. It was juss lively and up beat, dass hall.

Now as for Rock Steady, quote; "The rock steady era followed directly from ska to contrast it in several ways: it slowed the beat down; it was essentially a vocal style; and it was deliberately American as opposed from ska which had worked hard to establish a Jamaican identity.

Deliberately American? I don't think so..although Ancient did seh dat reggae was an American imitation, and many did laff him to scorn...him no deh bout now anniways.. Mi used to listen on shaawt wave at night to Cousin Brucie [sounds like the same one on 101.1 Fm now]... from WINZ, Miami and mi nevah hear nothing that sounded like Rock Steady, so dem no know wha dem a talk seh..awhoa... Vocal style essentially? A wha dem a talk seh. It was dah BEAT da beat dat changed for we were complaining that the ska was making us too tired and sweaty fi dance..and we need something slow...an if mi memorie serve mi karreckly..it was "Everybody get ready come do rocksteady" dat was the first Rocksteady chune.

Back to the sound systems, mi membah when Coxone used to blare his at Beeston Street and Bond Street karnah, and forget about Saturdays.

Man aize cuddn eat grass, everi minute vans used to pass blaring where the venue would be for their sound that night, sometimes tossing flyers as they went by...laawd, doese werre the days, oh yes, dose were di days..

As I said before as well, Bob Marley came on the scene as a voice for the oppressed in West Kingston, particularly Trench Town, where I lived at one time, when it didn't bear the infamy it does now. Mi used to hear Rastas chant day and night beating their drums close by and maybe Bob cudda hear dem as well....Babylon yuh chrone gaawn down was one of their favourites... He used his music as an avenue to bring about social awareness and criticize the government and ghe opressors, Babylon, beaurocracy and wickedness in high places just like Fela from Nigeria, and di ppl loved this and gravitated to it. Dat's when Babylon started to take note that something was wrong in the Land of the Voiceless, cozzin seh nobaddi nevah addressed the social and economic ills that were eating at the soul of the masses...so ^5 to Brodda Bob for dat. IMHO dat is/was the real role of Reggae, to edit to say GIVE a voice to these people and bring abut an awareness of some of the beaurocratic hypocrisy that was stifling the nation.

this is why I always plan my JA trips to include as many Sundays as I can possibly manage to squeez in:

"when it's 80 degrees at 2am and the bassline vibrates your bottle of Red Stripe, ..... packed in with like-minded people....... you feel it before you hear it..... deejay is vibing up the crowd...and every killer tune brings a noisy reaction."

man i live for sunday nights in JA, NO CLUB can beat dat.....

that is ALWAYS wah mi say too - why mento is never mentioned? It wasn't even included in that recent 2-hour PBS special bout the history of JA music..... i was astonished; it should be first in the chronology -- ok, maybe not necessarily the 'most important' to some, but definitely in terms of 'which came first', as it precedes evrything.....

ah...nutting can beat dem Sunday night out by di roundabout on airport road.....nutting...to me dat was di last great Sunday night spot before gunshot took over dance outings....afta dat u had to kip one yeye pon di gate or u point of exit, oops escape an di odda pon di people who a walk pass u or deh rung u....

now dance is all about profiling, and danger....

Intrestingly the Algerians claim they invented reggaee... Rai does contain certain similar elements...

I alos heard there is a new form of music in Cuba.. that the Cuban authorties are just begining to acknoledge.. Reggaeeton... it sounds kinda like a masala of Afro cuban riddims, reggae and hiphop

What kind of heresy is this? I hear raï all the time and it sounds nothing like reggae. Some Algerian artists incorporate reggae beats into their music like the Police and the Clash did back in the eighties. But to claim invention - no way!
