Racial Profiling

I'm encouraging some serious discourse on this subject. Here's the argument:

Mention racial profiling and the hair on the back of any minority's neck stand on end. The ability of unscrupulous law enforcement people to wreak havock with peoples lives using racial profiling is legendary. However, given the current state of affairs regarding the threat of terrorism, especially from people of middle-eastern descent, the government has a right, indeed an obligation, to employ any tactic including racial profiling to combat this horrible situation. Discuss.

The gov has no right to do what they do and have done, under the guise of a bogus situation.
They have not proven with out doubt that these ppl dem a profile are suseptible (sp) tuh anyting.
All they've done is create fear in de minds of fools who know not who to or who dem a follow.

Touchy subject no doubt. What about this angle:

Terrorist groups are nasty but they are also experts at achieving their goals. If the police start to profile/question/harrass/pay attention to people who "profile" like terrorists, won't the terrorist groups use this behaviour to their advantage.

Might they distract the police with decoys that suit the profile, while the "clean-cut" terrorists walk freely past and carry out their mission.

That's the problem with profiling. Makes it easy for the real crooks to get away unnoticed!

I might get attacked for this, but Cops pull over the "profiled" driver and the drunk in the suit and tie drives on by [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] that's the point I'm making

yu knoh Bandi...mi have a friend who is from ova deh so,an him is a first class pilot. never had any problems before always working,living in Canada over 20 years.

well since 9/11 him caan work no more....America cannot insure him so he has not flown since.

anyway,sometimes when we sit chatting and he says thing like, he never knew we (black people had it so hard) i am shocked. yes,yes he says he thought we were just blowing it out of context most times [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] .

well its sad but i cannot believe someone living in Canada could not notice that,you never have a Rasta flying plane (yes mi have a friend who had to cut him locks to get the job) or no Rasta cant be police,yes have one of those also......yu knoh what dem tell him Rastafarian is not a religeon but the East Indians have religeon so turban is ok .

well all mi say its about time someone else feels how it feels

I really have mixed feelings about this subject. As a black man I cringe everytime i hear about a case of profiling. I have read a lot about the discriminatory practices of cops, especially right here in New Jersey. I definitely would not like anyone I know to be exposed to such treatment. Were I a law abiding person of "middle-eastern" descent I would be offended if I were "profiled" just becaue of my ethnicity. Yet some people make the argument that because of the propensity of extremist Arab-Muslins to be "terrorists", we should pretend that racial profiling is justified in some cases. How can I justify treatment for another race that I am not prepared to accept for my race? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

profiling is wrong...wrong ... wrong

its value in apprendhing "terrorists" or criminals is negligible at most and suspect at best.

there are no "good" arguments that can be made for the value of profiling....all it does is embarass, instill fear, and makes you angry...what is the value of that to innocent citizens [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
