Irma and Pauline pulled two chairs from the long lunch table and to the corner of the room. There they sat huddled in the dark with only a small beam of light, sorry that Micheal had gone. The strain of waiting for his return and listening out for every strange sounds were beginning to wear on them.

During this time, Pauline told Irma what she had in mind. To say Irma was skeptical would've been putting it mildly, and Pauline was forced into trying to convince Irma of the rightness of the plan. Still, she was happy when they saw Micheal's headlights turn into the driveway.

"Aright, come wid it," he said upon entering. Pauline took a deep breath, prepared to launch into her tale, when the loudest sound yet came
from above.

They all jumped. "A wha dat?" Micheal vociferated.

"We no know," Pauline responded as they moved closer to him.

"It sound like a up deh so it a come from?" he indicated with his head.

"Yeah."

"An oonuu nuh check it out yet?" he derided, sensing their fear and playing it up for their benefit - especially Pauline's.

She responded, "Actually, we didda wait fi yuh. Yuh waa go check it out an come tell wi?"

"Yuh knoa how dark it is out deh? Mi a go need yuh flashlight."

"An whe wi a go use?" Irma snapped.

"Tun on de lights."

"But wi no really knoa a wha," Pauline say. "We no want alert im to fac dat smaddy deh yah."

"An a how yuh knoa say is a 'im'," Irma queried tremulously.

"She have a point," Micheal defended Pualine stoutly. "Aright oonuu siddung dehso-"

"Eena de dark?!" they cried.

"Well whe oonuu waa do den?" he asked impatiently.

"We a go come wid yuh," Pauline was firm.

Outside, they circled the building. "Mi no undastand dis," Micheal's voice was low. "Dat soun like supm uppa tap deh, but mi cyaa si how anyting woulda get in."

"Look!" Irma cried, her voice husky with excitement and fear. Their eyes followed where her finger pointed and noted that there was the faint outline of a small trap door that was almost inline with the roof.

They strained their eyes to have a closer look and was dumbfounded that they had never noticed it before. Moreover, there were no steps or even a ladder leading up to it, so how could anyone use it?

"A how im get up deh?" Pauline voiced their thoughts.

"You and dis 'im' 'im'!" Irma snapped. "It coulda be anyting."

"Like mongoose?" Pauline mocked.

Micheal chuckled and Irma frowned in the darkness. "Well dat ooda betta."

"An a when laas yuh hear say dem have mongoose a Kingston?"

"It nuh matta if a man or mongoose," Micheal said, "Mi a go up go tek a look. See dat?" he indicated the stanchion that was parallel to the trap door by about three feet. "Mi a go climb dat. Look deh: dem likkle boad deh wi do."

Pauline was doubtful and said so. Micheal responded, "Yuh fraid say mi a go hurt miself?"

"Yuh might drap an brok yuh neck an nex ting yuh knoa wi a go deh a police station a tell dem how wi come awn yah come si yuh a duggu duggu an maybe yuh did so happy say yuh finally get some dat yuh run an brok yuh neck!" she blithely returned.

He smiled in the dark and handed the flashlight to Irma. "Mek sure yuh shine it pan de pole so dat mi can si whe mi a go," he directed.

Sooner and easier than they had expected, he was at the door, lifting it out and away from himself. "Oy! Who in yah?" he called out. When there was no response he called out again, "Who deh yah! Show yuhself!"

No response was forthcoming, and his eyes could identify no shape in the thick darkness. He called down to the girls, "Mi a go need de flashlight!"

They looked at each other, someone would have to take the flashlight up and someone would be left below in the dark.

Pauline suggested that Irma go up first. "Yuh gwine haffi feel yuh way," Pauline said. "Tuck de flashlight eena yuh jeans' waist an tun it off. Cause yuh might blind yuhself."

Irma swallowed and taking the flashlight from Pauline, did as directed. Fear made her over cautious which in turn made her fingers and toes un-sure. This resulted in her ascension being painfully slow and stressful for all three.

At the last few feet, Micheal gave her a pull up and they dragged themselves into the opening of the trapdoor. He turned on the flashlight and shone it inside.

What they saw almost caused them to fall backwards.

Hey! Oy! Bo si yah! Pauline's angry whisper carried up to them. Shine dung de rhatid light so mi can come up!

Jus climb up man! Micheal urged. We need de light right yah now.

So how mi fi si?! Pauline was furious. Jus tun dung de blastid light.

Pauline, jus feel fi de boad dem pan de pipe, yuh wi aright. We really need de light now, an if yuh waa si wha up yah, den yuh betta tap chat an come on! Irma threw over her shoulder.

Pauline was angry but was spurred to action. Course she wanted to see, it had been her idea after all! Soon enough, she was at their heels, telling them to get out of her way.

Someone had to enter the space to make room for Pauline. Micheal did. He was forced to crouch, the space being no more than about 4' high.

Jus calm yuhself, he said.

A who im a talk to? Pauline asked breathlessly as she climbed up.

Him, Irma muttered.

Pauline peered in and pulled back sharply. 'Him' appeared to be just two white eyes in the pitch black. The eyes were steady, unblinking almost and without a face.

Oua Faada, which awt in eaven... Pauline began praying aloud.

Shhh! Micheal quieted her. The eyes turned to stare at him. Suddenly the light flickered. Pauline and Irma screamed simultaneously. Micheal knocked the flashlight against his palm and the beam was steadied.

Pauline and Irma's breathing was loud in the dark. The dark that now included only three pairs of eyes.

Whe it deh! Pauline cried out loudly.

Mikey whe it gawn? Irma's voice was equally panicked.

Because the eyes had disappeared. For the first time, Micheal was afraid. He had never seen anything like it. Eyes. Just eyes, the sclera the whitest he had ever seen. But wait, that was a good thing. If a did one duppy, then the sclera would've been red! His pragmatism returned. So it wasn't a duppy. And it wasn't an animal. Animal eyes were mostly yellow or sallow, with the pupils having a distinctly different shape and size from human eyes.

So the eyes belonged to a person. But who? Where did he go? Whe yuh name? Mikey called out. Pauline and Irma held their breath.

There was no response, and Mikey tried again. Come out nuh? Wi nah go hurt yuh!

Pauline and Irma glanced at each other and then glared at the back of Mikey's head. 'Wi nah go hurt yuh'? What made him think that they weren't the ones in danger of being hurt?

When the deep quiet persisted, Micheal decided to advance. Mi soon come back, he said to the girls. Mi a go check it out.

Yuh nah leave wi yah eno! Irma squeaked.

Up to oonuu self, he shrugged and moved off in a crouching forward movement. Pauline hooked her fingers into the waist of his pants while Irma had a similar hold on the back part of Pauline's collar.

Their gait was slow, uncoordinated and loud. They kept bumping into unidentifiables and the tension stretched their nerves to the breaking point.

Yuh a choke mi man! Pauline snapped at Irma, while struggling to wet her throat.

Sorry.

Hol awn deh, Micheal stopped suddenly. They peered over his shoulder and saw that he had come upon a door. It, like the trapdoor outside, was small and makeshift. Unlike the door outside, there was no handle.

Micheal switched the flashlight from his right hand to this left and ran his fingers over the door. There were no small indentations, fingerholes or even a nailhead for him to get a grip of.

Im behind yahso, he stated the obvious. But mi cyaa find noway fi get in.

Why wi mus go in? Irma was struggling to be practical. Whe im haffi do wid wi anyway? An im coulda een deh wid a machete a wait fi wi!

That decided it for Pauline, who hightailed it (or as near as she could considering the confines of the space) back to the opening. Mi an machete no gree! she cried. Irma followed her, feeling the back of her jeans for the envelope. If they were leaving, she wouldn't like to know that she had dropped the envelope here - where, machete or no, she'd have to come back to retrieve it.

Micheal's hissteeth stopped them. Bwoy, oonuu fraidy fraidy eeh man? Oonuu same one ask mi fi come up yah. Oonuu same one say oonuu nah stay dung deh while mi one come up yah. Now oonuu up yah oonuu a gwan like chicken. Cha...

Well mi rhadda bi a chicken an still have mi neck! Pauline retorted.

Aright, oonuu galang den, he said. Mi nah lef til mi find out a who up yah wid wi. An mi nah gi oonuu de flashlight needa.

Pauline and Irma looked at each other then peered down the pole to the ground. They couldn't go down without a light.

They turned to glare at Micheal but their glare was lost in the crash that sounded and the skittering flashlight that bounced and turned before going to settle in the corner.

Mikey! Irma screamed.
