Suesumba, people can make it difficult for themselves because of their OWN behaviour. What I object to is everyone being painted with the same brush becaues of colour and race. I have spoken to my son (from before he was a teenager) about watching what he wears and how he conducts himself in public. Wearing baggy pants, hat turned backwards (when this was in fashion), etc. is jsut inviting someone to harrass you. Tropicana, there is a difference between warning your son to be carfeul and saying that people make it difficult for themselves because of their behavior. Are you saying that you warn your son to be careful because of racism while telling him that because blacks act a certain way is why whites will be racist towards blacks?

Speaking of shop lifting, a few years ago there was an article in the Montreal Gazette about a black woman who was being followed around in a store, because of the following reasons below.
1. She was black
2. The clerks were told that all blacks are theives
3.Because she was black she could not afford to buy anthing from the store
There was a white customer in the store at the same time, she was left on her own while 3 clerks followed the black woman, 5 minutes later the balck woman left without purchasing, they did not even notice that the other customer was missing and the most expensive dress in the showcase was gone too ....

I always tell shop clerks this, when they give me attitude or follow me around. If they could afford anything in this store they wouldn't be standing behind that counter...they would be shopping like me.

EDITED TO ADD: there are no high end stores in regent part, jane/finch or the eglinton avenue west strip.

There are many high end stores on Eglinton Ave west..further up on Eglinton. There is also high end boutiques/stores(clothes are over $250) in the Jane Finch Mall and Yorkgate Mall...

Mz SueSusumber: I have experienced the same thing too especially when I lived in Rexdale. However, most of my negative experiences came from shopping in the Indian stores in the Albion mall.

And I know, as tonic says, why shop where you are being discriminated against... but when the discriminators own all the shops that carry what you want, what do you do...

What used to amuse me was seeing the antennae go up when I would enter the store and then seeing the same antennae being thrown into confusion when another black person would enter the store.

Shopping in White establishments:

A Jamaican born woman was once told not to try on the garments in a certain high end store because.

Because why? She demanded.

Because black people have a very distinct odor, she was told.

She works with a prominent legal firm in the city and when the establishment was threatened with a suit for discrimination, they sacked the employee (who had been with the company for eons) and sent a letter of apology and a copy of the letter of termination to the Jamaican woman.

Another case: A Jamaican man who was making a name for himself as a up and coming designer, thought he had made quite the coup by landing another high end store as a client. One day he decided to just drop in and he was firmly told to use the rear door next time - as he did not fit in with the clientelle.

..or does your experience in some way take wawy or add to the obvious problem?

To all those who I have known that are black men and haven't experienced racial profiling,I always say "in the future hope when you experience it, i hope you remember what we have been talking about.

incidentally one of them just called me this very morning and complaining about selective treatment he got. I did not re,emd hi, that it is quite common with some folks.

Suit yourself, what do you call a store that sell clothes $250 and up(designer labels)...there are two stores in there that get there stuff from Italy...I don't live in the area, however I own a home in that area. So I'm not saying this blindly
