sometimes when i'm shopping in certain neighbourhoods (with a large black population, like regent park) i'll get followed around the stores because i'm shoplifting. i've even been accused of changing the price tags on items up on eglinton avenue west when an item was incorrectly tagged by the store's own imployee.

i've lived in mostly white areas (rosedale for eg.) never had that problem. in my last neighbourhood which was mostly concentrated with italians and portuguese i didn't feel that i had that problem either.

i know that racism exists and i don't believe it to be "an imaginary construct". but what would cause these shop keepers to behave like this?

why is that?

What would cause you to keep shopping where you are being disrespected? It amuses me when blacks get disrespected and they keep shopping in the stores just to prove that they can afford to shop in racists store. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img] [/qb]

EDITED TO ADD: there are no high end stores in regent part, jane/finch or the eglinton avenue west strip. [/qb]

There are many high end stores on Eglinton Ave west..further up on Eglinton. There is also high end boutiques/stores(clothes are over $250) in the Jane Finch Mall and Yorkgate Mall... [/qb]

One of the two Toronto police officers whose arrest of a young black motorist has been ruled a case of racial profiling had a prior controversial traffic stop involving a black man .

In that case, a judge found that Detective Glenn Asselin, then a constable, and his then partner, Richard Shank, had no "reasonable basis upon which to stop and demand identification from a citizen ostensibly walking to a parked vehicle."

"The officers," Mr. Justice Peter Cumming of the Ontario Court, General Division, wrote in a 1997 ruling, "were not seeking to stop the person because of anything to do with his operating of the vehicle or to see whether it was roadworthy.

"The officers were simply acting intuitively on a hunch, as in their view, the area is a `drug-infested area' and the vehicle might be stolen."

Cumming's ruling upheld an earlier acquittal of Paul Reece, who had been arrested by Asselin and Shank at his home in 1993, charged with failing to give proper identification, driving while under suspension and assaulting police. No drugs were discovered. Reece testified he wasn't the man who police saw walking to the car.
