The rules are pretty much the same as in the first competition. Let me try and outline a few of them.

1. The Short Story Competition is open to all. Visitors, Members, Moderators, Administrators - anyone may enter.

2. Only one entry per participant.

3. After the initial entry is made, there shall be no editing of the story.

4. There will be no "To be continueds..."

5. Please remember this is a G-Rated board and as such, all stories must remain within the boundaries of the board rules

6. There is no word limit however, remember if it is too long, you might lose the interest of the reader.

7. The short story must be an original work and should not have been published anywhere else prior to this competition.

8. Plagiarized work will be disqualified.

9. This competition will run until February 22, 2004. Voting will begin on February 23, 2004 at 9 a.m. and end on February 28th at 11 p.m.

10. There will be no bribing by way of viagra, free money, free food, free trips etc. in order to get votes. Anyone found in violation of this rule stands in danger of being disqualified from the competition.

Hortense walked proudly to the river to bade as was her wont. Her hips swayed to the gentle breeze that blew as she made her way down to Aligator Pond.

She delicately removed her clothing and stepped into the water, being careful first to wash her matching panty and bra set (that came all di way fram Italy) with a scented soap and lay the matching delicates on a rock to dry.

No sooner had she turned her delicate bottom to the lilting kiss of the fragrance of the blushing hybiscus blossom she heard a voice coming from what seemed to be under the donkey pee pee tree.

Well, of course Hortense was afraid, she saw no one. Agen di vice call out to har "dawta cmeer, mi naggoh hurt yu dis cmeer".

She walked quite nakedly in the direction of the voice and peered underneath the bramble to find the biggest aligetta shi evva si in har life.

Quite to her surprise the aligator spoke "noh fraid man mi nah hurt yu but mi have sitt'n fi hax yu".

Hortense spoke aloud from the shock "Lawd Gawd, watta way alligetta mout TINK". To which the aligator replied: "den hawtense yu noh recagnize mi? A mi man Woodman", to which Hortense asked? "whaap'n to you Woodman".

Now at this time it must be explained that Woodman was a character in the beautiful village of Alligator Corners who had managed to father 33 children amongst the various women there. Seeing that the virtue of the women were at stake the biggest baddess fattest obya man (wan shart fat bredda weh wear two aizering and nayme Mass Clean) was assigned the task of taking care of Woodman.

Well Mass Clean turned Woodman into a big ol alligetta so that Woodman could spend his remaining days trying to avoid being made into very expensive adoah illegal, delightful shoes, matching purse and lipstick case and umbrella case and at the same time his delicate meat which tasted rather like chicken being shipped off on the underground alligetta meat market to be consumed by rich and ruthless consumers of the delicate product.

While the filling in of the talking allegetta background was tekking place Woodman agen spoke: "look fi brok Mass Clean speall yu haffi ride naked pon mi back crass di rivva".

Well Hortense being a person of great faith did just so. Woodman was instantly returned to his big beautiful hot self.

Hortense and he eventually married and he made much money as a stage show promoter to take care of his 33 chirren dem and he 29 baby moddas and Hortense.

Here's mi story A True Account

A Duppy (Ghost) Story.

I was born during the “post depression” era in the southern part of the United States. I was the only child born to Maxine and William A Ward. This in itself is not unusual, but the fact is, I was born with a “veil” over my face. To modern science, it just meant that the sack containing the surrounding fluids during pregnancy, had wrap around my face at birth. However, to my relatives, with their deep roots to African tribalism and old southern wives tales, it meant that I could see spirits. Growing up, I was told that I played with an imaginary figure behind my aunt’s furnace. A little spooky, but not as much as the frequent visits I would have in my dreams of suffocation because of being ridden by a witch, who only could attack me while I slept. I quickly learn to overcome her with the help of my grandmother who was wise.
All my childhood life I would have different encounters with various spirits. Some were friendly, and others were a little scary. But none of them were as scary as the one dead lady I encountered in College one night with a group of friends. Not only did I see the ghost, but they did too!

We had been out socializing with a group of other friends at S.I.U. in Carbondale Illinois. It was about 9:30 PM. Everyone had to go to school the next day, so my roommate, who own a car, was going to drop off this couple, who lived in a trailer part just on the fridge of town. The one negative about their trailer park was that it was built over a cemetery. Town’s folk claimed that all the bodies were not moved and frequently, people would see ghost. Being from a more city like surroundings, we just chuck it off as local superstition.

As we drove the couple home, we stopped at a light along side a guy on a motor cycle. Just as the light turn green, we saw a woman walking on the same side as the motor cycle as he passed her extremely close, so close that we thought he would hit her, we quickly realize that he didn’t see her. Our attention turning on the lady, we notice that the clothes she was wearing kind of floated in the air behind her. The driver panic. I realized that he and everyone in the car could see her. I was not afraid; it was normal stuff to me. The driver was afraid to pass her and wanted to turn into the on coming traffic. Seeing that this would kill everyone in the car, it was a ‘Volkswagen’ Beatle, and the on-coming traffic was a tractor trailer, I threaten the guy. I told him that if he didn’t run over the figure I would kill him myself. He believed me, because I was a martial arts instructor and he had seen me fight some guys one time. As we pass the woman, everything slowed down as if we were in a movie. We all looked at her as we passed. Her face was as pale as a cloud, no eyes, with a small glow around her. The driver, the couple, and my other room mate were screaming like mad. I kept yelling keep going, keep going, don’t turn into the ongoing traffic or we will be like her. At 60 miles an hour he kept going right through the woman. As she passed through the car, there was a slight chill, we were all speechless. As we look back after passing the woman with our mouths hanging open, we actually saw her fade to nothing. We dropped off the couple and the question was asked, what if we see her on the way back? I boldly stated, we run through her again, she already dead!

dr. hastings looked at his watch anxiously,he was due to perform a very important life or death surgical procedure in exactly 25 minutes,he paced the tiny room,he had good cause to be anxious,this particular procedure had never been attempted before,and if he was to be successful he needed to muster all his concentration.
once again he glanced at his watch,it was almost a minute later than when he last looked,he sat down,but stood bolt upright almost immediately,had he thought out all the possibilities,covered all the angles, and the possible emergency procedures should a scenario arise for one....the key to successfully carrying out such an operation as the one he was about to attempt,he thought,was having a good support team,he had carefully handpicked them himself,the anaesticist,the nurses,the doctors.

he knew that successfully carrying out a enthroculmonary of the brain has been debated many times in the respected surgeons journal the hedley,and the conscensus was that it was impossible,as personality was a natural trait in humans,and could not be determined by tampering with particular neurons,as he had argued.
he rehearsed the procedure in his head step by step,he calculated that the entire thing would take about seven hours,and although there were no guarantees that the patient would survive,he was 90 percent confident,he had already made numerous notes,in which he envisaged making his first incision below the patient`s hairline at the back,and entering the brain,this procedure had been widely condemned as dangerous,but doctor hastings enjoyed proving his detractors wrong.

once again he looked at his watch,20 minutes and counting,he allowed his mind to wander for a minute,his whole career has been built on defying others,and pushing back frontiers that others had said was impossible,he was head of the team that researched the possibility of the human arm being bent backwards at the elbow,and the head being able to do a 380 degree turn. he had also put in numerous applications to the human pioneering body research dept. for what he called a cardiorespiratanal machine, that would make it possible for chronically ill patients to breathe through their anal passage whilst undergoing surgery,and without the need for anaesthetics.

he sometimes thought that his work was not appreciated as he would have liked,his life`s ambition was to win the respected nobel prize for his work in medicine,and even whilst still at university he was always to be found in the laboratory carrying out numerous research and studies on accident victims he would bribe hard up orderlies to secure for him from the local hospital.

dr.hastings checked his watch,10 minutes to go,he liked to be alone before an important operation,carrying out an enthroculmonary was to his knowledge the most important so far in his career,all his detractors would finally sit up and acknowledge him.

he was just about to take yet another look at his watch,when the door to the room suddenly opened,the three doctors entered the room and walked up to dr.hastings and addressed him,"ok doc.on your feet,its time", the doctor took a deep breath as he slowly rose to his feet, one of the orderly abruptly grabbed the doc. by his arm and quickly inserted a needle,as he slowly squeezed the contents of the needle into the doc`s arm watched intently by the other two he smirked at the doctor,"so what are you today doc,a professor,an astronaut,or maybe you are a famous surgeon again today",

all three men chuckled and laughed at the doctor as they slammed the door shut behind them on the tiny padded cell,the doc sat back down on the tiny bed and looked at his watch once again,they can laugh he thought,they will be laughing on the other side of their faces when he finally performs his enthroculmonary operation,....they will see.

The Player


Sandra looked idly out of her window, a mother was pushing a pram with a screaming toddler in it into the bed and breakfast motel across the road.
Social Security mother, she thought with disgust. How could these women have these snivelling brats knowing they would have to struggle to support them?

And which man worth anything would take on one of these women??

The telephone shrilled suddenly, bringing her back to reality.
It must be Robert, telling her he was late as usual.

'Yes?' she snapped into the reciever.
'Hi babes, just seeing how you were,' a deep voice said.
It was Sean, the banker with the house in Hampstead and the BMW, she thought to herself, she had told him last night she was sick, as she had already told Trevor he could come over for dinner.

'Oh hi darling,' she said putting on the weakest voice she could.
'Was just trying to get some sleep, I'm still having really bad cramps,' she said.
'Want me to take some time off work and come by?' he said.
Damn him, she couldn't have that, her other lover Robert was due over soon, he was taking her shopping.

'No sweetheart, I just need some time to sleep it off, I'll call you later ok?' she said firnly, he needed to realize he couldn't just pop over any time he wanted.
'Ok then...if you're sure you don't need any company,' he said regretfully.
'I'll be fine, talk to you later honey,' she said.
Why did he have to be so clingy she thought.
Maybe it wasn't such a good idea getting involved with him after all.
But then he WAS loaded she thought with a satisfied smile.

She had gone to meet a girlfriend at a City bar.
She had been wearing her Chanel sunglasses, her Louis Vitton baguette bought by Trevor casually under one arm and a brand new Versace outfit Robert had bought her the week before, her blonde hair immaculate, fresh from the hairdresser.
She was sitting there angrily tapping her fingers. How dare she be late, she thought angrily, frowning.
'You ok?' she heard someone say.
Behind her was a tall, well built man in a suit. She noted with satisfaction the Burberry tie, the gold tie pin and cufflinks. He had white blond hair and deep blue eyes.
'I'm fine', she purred demurely.
'My girlfriend seems to have stood me up again.' Thank God she did, she thought to herself, I've struck paydirt!!
'Can I get you a drink?' he said.
'Champagne would be nice,' she smiled.

He had given her his number and she had found he had a 4 bedroom house in Hampstead, he was an investment banker and had been single for 3 months. Then her friend had come and all three of them had had a really good evening.
That was a month ago and since then, she'd ensured she had moved in quickly.

She already had Trevor who was an accountant with a major company, who was laughably predictable, but with a nasty habit or being late.
She was seriously thinking of replacing Robert, only the fact that he kept promising her money was keeping him around.
But the money she got from Trevor was not enough to keep her in the style she was accustomed to.
Now if only she could find a man rich enough to pay for everything, she could stop the juggling around which sometimes got quite tiresome.
Maybe a man like Sean...

The doorbell rang, interrupting her chain of thought.
She quickly picked up her bag and pulled on her slippers, she had to make sure he didn't come in, or he'd end up wanting to take her to bed and then she might not be able to ensure he took her shopping. Plus, she'd slept with Trevor last night and she didn't think she'd be able to endure the massive faking she was going to have to do.

Robert stood on the step with the mandatory bunch of flowers. She was always struck by his sheer attractiveness, he was a gorgeous shade of chocolate with a body to die for. She'd been struck by his looks the first time she'd seen him a few months before, at a restaurant where she'd been waiting for Trevor. He was the first black man she'd ever been with not that colour mattered. The money was the important thing.

'Hi babe,' he said and bent to kiss her.
'Missed you sweetheart,' she said automatically.
'Wish we could stay home and well 'make up for lost time', but we have to go.' she said, closing the door behind her.

He looked at her quizzically, a small smile playing on his lips.
'Hold on baby, just need the bathroom before we go,' he said.

She sighed and opened the door again.
Damn she'd better switch off her mobile, didn't want Trevor or Sean calling when she was with Robert.

'Be back in a minute.' he said, and went to the bathroom, locking the door behind him.
Robert flushed the toilet and as he went to close the lid he saw a black diary lying on the floor.
Idly he flipped to the most recent entry and began to read.
As he read, he quickly became more angry than he'd ever been. Neatly written methodically were his name and the names of other men, times and dates of rendezvous, down to how much they spent on her and cash given.
The little conniving ***** !
Well he'd show her what happened to players.

Robert quickly took a condom out of his wallet and pushed his tie pin through it, puncturing the foil and the plastic.
Smiling to himself, he replaced it in his waller, waited a few seconds and went back out.

Deanne looked up, hiding a scowl. She might as well just get it over with.
'Come here babes,' she said plastering a fake smile on her face.

'Mmmm...you smell nice,' he said.
Oh no, she thought, she could see where this was headed.
'Hadn't we better go now?' she said, masking her disappointment.
'I haven't seen you for ages, don't you want to spend a little time with me?' he said, pulling her closer.
He kissed her and pulled her to the bedroom.


Much later, they lay on the bed.
'I love you babes,' she said.
'You sure?' he said turning to look at her.
'Of course I do!' she said.
What's this, an interrogation, she thought crossly.
'Hadn't you better get back to work?' she said.
'Is that the time?' he said, 'I'd better go. Sorry about the shopping, I'll take you some other time.'

Damn right you will she thought angrily.

A few days later, she sat in a restaurant with Sean.
She loved being with him, loved getting the envious glances from other women and the fact he was always dressed immaculately.
They'd just finished dinner, and even though he didn't know it yet, he would be coming back to hers for dessert.

'Want some dessert?' he said looking at her with his piercing blue eyes.
'How about coming back to mine for some?' she said quietly, making sure he knew just what was on offer.
'Love to,' he said, a small smile playing on his lips.
She smiled back at him, another one down she thought.
Now, the next move would be harder. She was tired of playing the juggling game, she wanted to have a huge rock on her finger and a rich husband, Sean fit the bill perfectly. She needed to move fast, she didn't want someone else escaping with her prize...She knew what she was going to do, she was going to get pregnant.

As they entered her house she switched on the lights.
'Nice place,' he said looking around.
Trevor had furnished the flat when she first moved in. Trevor who she would be rid of very shortly if her plan worked.
'It's not bad,' she smiled back at a him. But not as nice as the house we'll be having together she thought silently.

'I'Il just be a minute,' she said going into the bathroom.
She took out a condom out of the bathroom cabinet and smiled to herself as she pierced it with a safety pin and slipped it in her pocket.
She went back out and put her arms around him and led him to the bedroom.


A week later, she sat by her window watching two Social security mothers pushing their children past, she looked away in disgust. Stupid idiots she thought, stubbing out her cigarette.

The buzzer went, Trevor was coming over. She hated him, she thought to herself. With his bald head, generous paunch and wrinkled skin, his old man's body. But you had to sacrifice to gain, he had two grown up children and a vasectomy, so at least he wouldn't be wanting any kids and gave her money regularly. She'd had a week of pure happiness with Sean, he'd come over every night and stayed until the wee hours of the morning.

She opened the door, Trevor stood there smiling with his yellowed teeth.
He kissed her, sending a shudder of revulsion through her body.
Still, at least it wouldn't take long, he was 63 after all and it showed.

As she ushered him out and kissed him the next morning, carefully hiding her disgust, she thought with relief that it would be at least a week before she had to go through having him there again.
Trevor was enough to make anyone sick she thought sourly.
She plugged her phone back in and as she did so, the phone went.
It was Sean, telling her his company was sending him to Tokoyo for 4 months. She felt sick, surely they were over?
He went on to say he would call every day and count the days until he got back...

Four months later, she smiled to herself. She had got rid of Robert, although it had seemed only too easy to do, he had just smiled and wished her luck.
Trevor had been harder and it meant money was tight, but soon, she'd have no more worries about money.
She put her hand over her enlarged stomach, this was going to make her rich.
She had told Sean she had a suprise for him when he got back, and even though he had tried to worm it out of her, she'd refused to tell him.
He told her he had something to tell her too, but she knew he was just saying that to wind her up.

She got up and re-arranged the flowers on the table for the third time, Sean had come back earlier that day and was coming around for dinner. She was wearing a loose smock dress, deliberately choosen to hide her stomach, she wanted to tell him rather than show him the moment he walked in.

The doorbell went and she opened the door, Sean stood there with a big smile and a bunch or roses in one hand.
She hugged him carefully, trying not to let him hold her too close.
They sat down and she brought out the food.
'Baby, I've got something to tell you,' she said with a big smile.
'So have I,' he said, but you go first.' he said sipping a glass of wine.
'Ok, well, I'm pregnant!'

The glass slipped out of his hand and smashed onto the floor, he looked at her with disgust.
'YOU'RE WHAT??' he shouted angrily.
She couldn't believe it, she had thought he'd be delighted.
He went to say more, but just grabbed his coat in one hand and strode out of the house, slamming the door behind him.
She went numb with disbelief, how could he treat her in that way???
Then she calmed herself, if he wanted to act like that, he could. But she knew where he worked and she was going to sue him for millions.
A small smile played at her lips as she thought of all the money she was going to get....

Five months later, as she sat on her hospital bed, the nurse came with the bundle that was her son, she smiled to herself. It had been a rough ride, being alone with no men to support her, but she had taken out a loan on her house to get her through, Sean would be paying that and a lot more once all the paternity tests were done....As the baby was put into her arms the nurse had to grab hold of it as she nearly dropped it.
Her son was a beautiful shade of chocolate with curly black hair.


As the new occupant of Sandra's flat looked out, she saw a hunched figure pushing a dirty pram with a screaming toddler in it.
Damn Social security mothers she thought.

Sandra took one last look across the road at her old flat as she pushed her screaming son back to the dirty hovel that was now her home.

It's all Relative

Rhatid mi get whe! Mi get whe to rhatid! Leroy’s mind screamed in glee and disbelief. He peered out anxiously through a slit in the side of his zinc shed and was able to make out nothing from the ordinary. The hillside was awash with the rays of moonlight, and the dancing shadows cast by the leaves from the banana trees, the mango trees, the giant cedars, were comforting to Leroy. He knew every tree, every plant, and every bush. He knew their shape, their size, and their density. He would know if an informer had taken refuge within the foliage’s shadow. The shadows were undisturbed.

Leroy tried to straighten out his legs and stretch his back. The creak from the rusty old zinc siding and the precarious wooden bench stopped him mid motion. “Watch it bwoy. Yuh come too far fi get ketch now!”

Again he peered cautiously through the slit in the zinc shed. Nothing had changed. Still, he looked even closer at the shadow, willing them to reveal anything amiss. They remained true. He breathed out slowly and softly. His anxiety taking wings on his breath and flying off. His vision became fanciful, just as it would when he would lie on the grassy slopes and gaze heavenward to see the different shapes that God was making with the clouds. Leroy liked playing those games with God: God would draw something in the clouds, and Leroy had just a few moments to figure it out, before God would erase it and draw something else. Leroy grinned and pulled his neck down into his shoulder. The last score between him and God was – Leroy 255 – God 247. Yeah, God was tough, but Leroy was getting better. Still, God was aright. He didn’t get mad that Leroy was getting so good at the game.

Now as Leroy studied the shadows, he fancied that one particular shadow was Reverend Simmons. Yeah man, the shadow cast by a banana tree with a cedar in the background, were an artist’s easy strokes of Rev Simmons. From his long neck, to his oversized gut. From his big ‘rich man’s’ ears, to his buck forehead. That was Rev Simmons all right. Leroy’s body tensed. That eediot Rev always mek him feel away eno. Leroy was trying so hard. So hard to be good. When he was a little boy, his grandmother had told him that he had to find God in church. All Leroy had found in Church was old people smelling of mothballs, and fidgety children. So he had stayed away.

But as he grew up, he decided to go back to the church. Afterall, if Granny said that God was to be found in church, then that’s where He’d be! Still Leroy found nothing. Except grief from Rev Simmons who had taken an instant and illogical dislike to Leroy. Every Sunday his sermon would include something that Leroy had either said, done, or was imagined to have done. Every day, Leroy was that much closer to burning in a hell fire. Damn. There’s only so much a man can take. And Leroy had had enough. So he quit going.

His days again became solely consisting of hustling - money or women. He was good at both. When he wanted a break, he would find his favourite spot on the hillside lay back with his hands behind his head and play his favourite game with God. Life was easy. Life was good. Then one day, God told Leroy to go back to church. Nah sah. Leroy almost had a falling out with God over that. Why would he want to go back to church? He’d found God here, on this beautiful hillside, away from all the noise, disruptive smells and aggravation of church. Away from Rev Simmons and his happy promise of hell fire. Why would he want to go back?

Leroy and God argued back and forth ‘til finally Leroy gave in and went back to church. This made Rev Simmons a happy man. It helps vastly when ones vile, godless, totally unredeemable subject is sitting in the pews, and hearing first hand the fate that awaits him. When Leroy went back to church and was subjected to it all again he vowed to at least do something that would merit his inescapable punishment.

So Leroy decided to steal the good reverend’s prized cow. Ah how Rev Simmons treasured that animal. The merits of Goldie’s colour, grandeur of her size, the delicate flaring of her nostrils, the unbelievable quality and goodness of her milk, was such that, like Leroy’s irreparable deviancy, it made the sermon every Sunday.

And steal the cow Leroy did. Or did he? While he tried to pull, push, coax threaten and revile, the animal would not move until Leroy, getting quite thirsty from the ordeal, suckled at the cows teats. Suddenly, Goldie mooed softly and nuzzled Leroy. “Hush up!” Leroy whispered anxiously. “Whe yuh a come moo bout? Cho.”

Goldie mooed louder and rolled her eyes at Leroy. Leroy clamped his hands around her mouth and pressed his face close to hers. “Lissen to me: How yuh mout so big? Ah mi yuh want dem come ketch? Yuh have any idea whe dem ooda do to me? An yuh tink say caw im a Reverend im a go go easy pan mi? No sah, im jussa look fi a reason fi sen mi gaa hell imself! So hush yuh rhatid mout y’ear mi?”

He glared balefully at her. In turn, Goldie batted her eyes and licked his face. What?! Poor Leroy let go and fell flat on his backside. Goldie put her head down and nuzzled his crotch. Leroy grabbed onto the area in question and while still on his back, used his elbows and his feet to scoot away from Goldie. Goldie just ambled sexily along – keeping her gaze trained on him, and her tongue flickering naughtily. Suddenly the whole idea of stealing Goldie did not seem so attractive anymore. However Leroy certainly seemed attractive to Goldie – he could swear that she was casting him a come-hither look and batting her big cow eyelids!

“Stop!” Leroy demanded, palms outward. “Stop right deh so!” Still Goldie kept coming closer, softly lowing. “Mi nah ramp wid yuh eno!” Leroy fought the urge to scream at the cow and instead whispered fiercely. “Mi say yuh fi tap!” Goldie kept advancing, Leroy kept backing up. His instinct told him that he daren’t take his eyes off her, or she would probably jump him.

So he kept backing up, tripping over his own legs, shrubs, above-soil roots. He pleaded with Goldie. He begged her to just stop or go back. Still she advanced.

“Den a how yuh come een lakka ooman so? Mi look like any bull to yuh? Move man! Move mi say!” Leroy screamed, caution giving way to terror. This cow was looking at him like Maas Cutry’s daughter would when she wanted the sweetness.

Suddenly the lights came on in Reverend Simmons’ house. Goldie swished her tail. She lowed.

Leroy’s eyes bulged in terror, no sah, Rev Simmons cyaa find im yah! Im ooda troa im eena jail before de dyam cow coulda blink!!! Leroy discarded stealth and ran as fast as he could. He did not need to look behind him to see that Goldie was pounding the earth in her race to thwart his escape. Leroy ran down the hill, and through the valley. He ran across the stream and over the rocks. He ran until he came to his little zinc shed. And he slipped in, trembling violently.

“Mi get whe!”

He could see no sign of Goldie or Reverend Simmons. Still, he would keep his eyes open all night. If he closed his eyes, they might catch him. He heard a slight rumble, which caused him to jump. It was a distant thunder. Good rain a go fall. No, wait! No rain nah go fall! Leroy stood up angrily as the thunder rumbled merrily.

“Yuh!” Leroy screamed, shaking his fist heavenward and his eyes bugging in dawning recognition. “Yuh set mi up! Jus cawse mi whenna win, yuh set mi up!”

The thunder rumbled even more mightily – or was it a good belly laugh? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Moosey

There was much she couldn’t know about these strange beasts that sought to invade her domain. Their motives were so alien, foreign to her way of thinking. They cared little for the natural power of the place, the manna that the very ground and trees and animals exuded.

She had not been strong then, her powers just developing. Little cantrips and small illusions had been the tricks of her trade, but they had not dissuaded the beasts.

Men, the ancients called them. New upon this orb, and arrogant, so sure of their might they were. Brutes, she thought them, like the goblins of ages gone by. A silent promise to herself, she made, that it would be the last time she would be vanquished.

The beasts came on and she soon divined their full intent. They sought other men out here in the pale moonlight, meant to do them murder. It was certain that they did not feel in their own hearts that the violence they would do would be murder. They actually thought her domain was theirs, and they sought to protect it from invaders just as she did.

On one level she understood this, while on another she did not.

The line of men glided smoothly toward her. Their thoughts assailed her and it took a moment to filter through them and block them out.

Jesus, I’m tired.

Hope we run into those bastards.

Hope we don’t run into those bastards.

Damn kids got no consideration for what you do for them. God, I hate Daniels. I hope someone shoots his ***.

What an absolutely gorgeous place this can be in the moonlight. The shimmer off the trees, the sparkle of the spindrift as the breeze moves the snow around and even the moon itself is glorious.

She didn’t block this one out. She listened to his thoughts, trying to understand the things that motivated these man. This one she felt a connection with.

Drake signaled ahead to the point man to take a break in the next stand of trees. There was a large, open danger area on the other side and he would want to take a halt to listen for any man made sounds. The stark, simple beauty of the arctic tundra mesmerized him as it shimmered in the alpenglow of the cold night air.

His men were performing wonderfully, and he was proud to call them his own. Handpicked and trained to perform in arctic, sub arctic and high mountain environments, these men were the best of the best. It was his honor to lead them.

The point man Daniels glided to a stop near the far end of the tree line. He pulled a cigarette from the pack and carefully lit it, concealing the flame. The smoke drifted up into the tree.

She tensed. She was close by the man-beasts in the small copse of trees they’d chosen to shelter their presence. She knew she was beyond the ability of these to sense, but had to protect her charge Moosey, who had chosen this copse in which to pass the night.

She had hoped the men would pass through, but they had stopped. Resting, drinking and some inhaling smoke. She would stay to protect Moosey.

Drake finished drinking from his canteen. He could smell the smoke from up front and knew that Daniels and probably Weber were smoking. He’d let it go for now, as he didn’t think there were any Russians within a thousand miles of this place.

Just then, he felt eyes upon him, from very close.

Moosey kept staring at the animal in front of him. He’d been taking a standing nap, when these strange things floated past him. They didn’t walk or run like Moosey did, they just moved. How strange these beasts were with white skin like the Oathkeeper, but so much bigger they were. If he just kept staring, maybe they’d go away.

Drake looked over and saw a broad, powerfully built bull moose staring him dead in the eye. He got the distinct impression it was evaluating him as friend or foe, and it must have decided not foe. He looked into the dark brown eyes of the animal and saw intelligence there. The animal has dismissed him as a threat and now just wanted him to move on.

She gently moved through the trees, leaving no trace of her passage. Long ago, her predecessor had taught her this skill and now, her own skill was unsurpassed. No sign, not a bent blade of grass, a disturbed granule of snow or a fluttering needle on an evergreen, would mark her passage.

Up to Moosey and with a gentle, sibilant sound she sent him wandering on his way, leaving this copse to the men.... and to distract the interlopers from pursuing her charge, she conjured up the most powerful illusion in her arsenal.

She spread shimmering green light throughout the arctic sky. It was one of the great secrets of the ancients, this spell, and one of the highest honors for an Oathkeeper, was the day they were entrusted with this piece of magic.

Within tonight’s casting, she interjected subtle, but breathtaking nuances that had never been there before, a calming offering of peace to these men.

Although primarily a distraction to cover Moosey's withdrawal, she hoped it would affect them in some manner that would lighten their hearts and bring them closer to the level of devotion she felt to her domain.

Drake stared at the moose, which suddenly broke the stare and moved away. Out of the corner of his eye, he could swear he had seen the lithe form of a beautiful woman. Perfect white teeth, smiling behind perfectly formed pink lips and her hand scribing a glowing, smoky symbol in the air before her.

He blinked... and the woman disappeared.

He removed his ski goggles, and rubbed his eyes. Hallucinations were a warning sign of dehydration. He grabbed his canteen, opened his eyes again and saw the image before him.

She revealed herself to the man, standing before him. She could see the wonder in his eyes, and then the understanding. He knew what she was and what purpose she served here. Their eyes met and she saw him bow to her, a slight dip of the head while he held her eyes....

.. and then she was gone.

Moosey found another small stand of trees in the lee of a small hillock. He scraped at the snow, found tender grass beneath and had a quick snack.

The night wasn’t a complete loss.
