Jamaica Red Cross appeals for S. Asia aid

The Jamaica Red Cross has launched a local appeal in response to the Earthquake and Tsunami disaster in South Asia.

The Red Cross says it is cognizant and grateful for the local and international aid received following Hurricane Ivan, and it is for this reason that it is encouraging Jamaicans to demonstrate their commitment to humanity by contributing to the relief effort.

Donations to the Asian Relief fund may be made at any branch of Scotia Bank, account number 20499.

In the meantime, the Consular Corps of Jamaica has also started a disaster fund for those affected in Asia. Dean of the Consular Corps, Arnold Foote, said donations to the Tsunami Disaster Fund may be made at Scotia bank branches island-wide, account number 801330.

Actually Red Cross is doing a lot for the hurricane victims in Jamaica. It was one of the most trusted agencies and ranked higher than the Government Agency (in terms of who donors trusted) set up to help the victims.

Evan, every likkle bit counts..hiff a even fi sen some green bananas and coconuts dem shudda package dem and sen dem. Starvation is a problem and many of these places cultivate the same type foodstuff that we do. Last but not least, one never knows when one will be on the receiving end.

What about the poor an destitute people dem ah Jamaica weh need nuff help??!! "Charity begins at home", Jamaica should take care of it's own problems before looking to give to another country.. We are not the USA, UK or Japan who have nuff resourses available to spread around the world, we ( Jamaica ) haven't even got enough resources to take care of the whole island. What about all dem poor people weh still ah suffer from the aftermath of the last hurricane, dem fi get take care ah first. What about all the massive amount ah people ah Jamaica who are living well below the poverty line with no health care, clothes or food to eat, de politician and red cross dem fi go ah riverton city and see real suffering and poverty before even thinking bout sending anything abroad fi other people. If Jamaica ah look fi get good name worldwide it naw go work by taking care of other people before theirs.

I hear you SB; but sending/sharing from your meagre resources will be done in the name of diplomacy. Trinidad is still relatively a poor country but they stepped up to the plate after Ivan's havoc. It is a small world, kindness is not always forgotten. Who knows, maybe those suffering now will rise again to help those who had helped them, one never knows. Fate is a helluvah ting. One never knows!!

C'mon Simple_Black is that the way you really think bro?

Even poor and ravished India who suffered loses in the Tsumani is helping their neighbours.

You give a little to get a lot...that's how I see it.Don't you think the US, Japan and England have issues to deal with at home to help their needy? So what if they were to say, I have a homeless crisis to deal with, I have Fl to deal with after Ivan, I have all these things to worry about and I just can't help..I am sure you would frown up on that.

And when yuh give to others in need I sure hope it is not done to "look good" to other people..you do it because it is the humane thing to do.

The Red Cross is not the Government.

The Red Cross/Red Crescent is mandated to deal with disasters.
The Government of whatever countries should look after their poor.
The world Organizations and Government should respond to disasters.

Please think and don't get those three tings mixed up.

Agreed Wendy, but all mi ah seh is dat nuff people dem inna Jamaica are in desperate need of help as well. Jamaica should take care of their own before giving to others. What's the point of giving to others and then leaving your own people without and still suffering.

I remember my Mom always telling us, give and do not count the cost; and when I got older I came to realise that what is given in good faith somehow, somwhere, sometimes comes back to us a hundred fold..the universe is a very strange phenomenon..it is better to give than to receive.

It's one thing to talk about solidarity and sing it in conscious music, but quite another to put it into practice. Yes, Jamaica has plenty of its own problems and shortcomings, but I like the fact that Jamaican people are always there for others, from supporting anti-apartheid in South Africa to welcoming Haitian refugees.

Sometimes poorer nations are more effective in providing aid than wealthy nations. Cuban doctors have done a great deal of good in Haiti and Venezuela for example.
