Yes...Nunya you are right about the withdrawl method...there is sperm present before ejaculation...also this person that is asking about contraceptive methods...is this someone who is worried about STDs or only preventing pregancy....many of the methods mentioned in the thread will not prevent STS....so that clarification is important....(Sugar sneaks away again for a month...damn school)

Lets see ive tried everything in the book...

started on birth control pills.. they made me gain weight.. and id get tingly in my fingers..

used diaphragms.. on and off.. get the jelly in those things.. and then the thing would fling across the room when you were inserting it... never mind catching all the ejaculant.. and it hitting that thing like a trampoline.. and it pouring down your leg..


then i tried sponge and foam.. and natural methods.. of checking mucus.. basal body temp...

Well ill leave out some details... but none of those proved good for me..

SO NOW.......

I've used an IUD for 17 years.. and I love it.. Never have to think about pregnancy ever....no pain or problems associated with it at all..

Ive only had sex with a condom once and i absolutely hated it... but if you found one thats so terrific..im sure lots of folks will be interested...... next thing you know.. youll be in business on the board... (send me one.. LOL.. you got me curious)

I had a friend on *that method*
She has two girls, that is validation that it dont work and is not 100 percent effective....
come to think bout it, me have another friend too..(a nurse) and she used that method..
but she now has a 4 year old...

Yes lady Z rhythm and natural family planning are different.

I *think* the rhythm method is the counting of days but natural family planning is the temperature taking and all that...but not too sure...(as mi want to be at least 90% certain seh Coolbeans Jr. don't make a sudden and unplanned appearance)...maybe somebody can tell us the real deal?

The Mirena is meant to be quite good. It's an intrauterine system (IUS) and releases a progestogen . It can stay in place for five years and is as effective as being sterilised. Anybody tried, or is considering this?

I have a Mirena...I had it inserted after the birth of my son. I had wanted a tubal ligation, but my gyn felt that the Mirena might be a better option in case I changed my mind about having another child. I have had no problems at all. My period is still very regular, but I now call it the shadow period as it is so light and only lasts for a day or two each month.

My husband and I are still adament about not having any more children, but I think my gyn made a great recommendation. She too has the same devise.

Before the Mirena I was on the pill for nearly 15 years pretty steadily. While I had no problems with it during all of that time, I found that once I had my son the very same pill was doing strange things to me. I was having break though bleeding...dangerous since there is a chance of pregnancy and my emotions were on a roller coaster. Some of that could have been my post pregnant body readjusting to a nonpregnant state, but I just did not want to continue on that path.

If there are any specific questions about the Mirena I will be very happy to answer.

i was reading about this and i'm gonna have it inserted because it cuts down on heavy bleeding as well.

SueSamba...it certainly does cut down on that. I have had no problems in the year and a half that I have had it. I am hoping that by the time the fifth year comes along I will be menopausal so will not have to worry anyway, but if not I will have another one inserted.

Lady Z...the cost is kind of tricky. My insurance would cover it 100%, but my gyn office would not order it for me. I had to order and pay for it and have it sent to their office. When insurance says that they cover something at 100% it means 100% of the NEGOTIATED rate which usually means at a fraction of the actual cost. I ended up paying for the devise myself. If I remember correctly it was about $200. plus my $20. copay for the office visit. Divide that by 60 months and you get $3.66 per month. Much less than any other form of reliable birth control...that is except for abstinance.

Thanks jones. I think that the Mirena is going to be my pill alternative. I've been fine with the pill, but I would prefer something that I do not have to think about every day.

What is Depo-Provera?

Depo Provera is a hormone injection that lasts for 3 months to prevent pregnancy. The injection has synthetic progesterone and no estrogen. It is usually given in the arm or rear, delivering a high level of progesterone into the body. Depo Provera stops the ovaries from releasing eggs. It thickens the cervical mucus and changes the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to enter or survive in the uterus. These changes prevent fertilization. Depo Provera is a very private form of birth control because it cannot be seen on the body and requires no home supplies. It does, however, require a clinic appointment every 3 months. Depo Provera is 99.7% effective as birth control. It does not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDS.

Btw, Jamaica is one of the countries in which new methods of birth control (including depo prevera are tested to which Nunya is referring) are tested before it is determined if they are safe enough for middle class, White women. (Same thing happened with the IUDs/).

A. Depo-Provera and Norplant have been disproportionately promoted among women of color, indigenous women, women with disabilities, and women on federal assistance. Population control, (largely through sterilization), directed against people of color and indigenous people has an extensive history in the US and internationally. As many Third World countries began to resist the neo-colonial economic policies imposed by the World Bank and IMF, US government and business interests blamed the unrest on the Third World's "overpopulation problem." In 1977, R. T. Ravenholt from the US Agency for International Development (AID), announced the plan to sterilize a quarter of the world's women because, as he put it,


Population control is necessary to maintain "the normal operation of US Commercial interests around the world. Without our trying to help these countries with their economic and social development, the world would rebel against the strong US commercial presence.

The state's increased interest in limiting the growth of people of color in the US coincided with the expansion of post-World War II welfare provisions that have allowed many people of color to leave exploitative jobs. As a result, the growing unemployment rate among people of color means that non-white America is no longer simply a reservoir of cheap labor; it is considered "surplus" populations. Also, as land rights struggles increase between Native communities and the US government, it becomes in the interest of the US to have as few Native peoples as possible. One recently declassified federal document, National Security Study Memorandum 200, revealed that even in 1976 the U.S. government regarded the growth of non-white population as a threat national security.

While sterilization abuse in the U.S. has ebbed somewhat since the 1970's, population control efforts abroad have increased. Women in the Third World, moreover, are regarded as an expendable testing pool for contraceptive drugs. Before Norplant was introduced to the U.S., the device was tested on nearly half a million Indonesian women, most of whom received no counseling regarding the drug’s possible adverse effects. Many were not even told that the device had to be removed after five years to avoid the risk of ectopic pregnancy. In India, 3,5000 were given Norplant without screening to determine whether they were suitable candidates for the study. They received no warning of the drug’s possible adverse effects. The study was finally stopped due to concerns about "teratogenicity and carcinogenicity." In both cases, women who wanted the implants removed had trouble finding doctors who were both willing and able to perform the procedure (Even in the U.S. many doctors know how to insert Norplant, but far fewer know how to remove it.).
