Contraceptive Technologies

In the western context, the women's movement made a clear demand for contraceptives. Contraceptives, which de-linked sexual relations from procreation were seen as liberating, and were welcome as they provided the key to gain 'control over the body'. However by the middle of this century the western movement saw the increased medicalization of women's bodies and the consequent violations. This gave rise to several self-help groups to counsel women, provide contraceptives and abortion services, and encourage natural childbirth, including home deliveries. Hazardous contraceptives like the Dalkon shield were banned through sustained campaigning and court trials. However some banned drugs and contraceptives which were opposed by western women are now marketed to women of poor countries. Women from the disadvantaged sections of countries like Jamaica, Thailand, Mexico, Bangladesh and India have become unsuspecting guinea pigs for test trials, which take place without their consent or concern for their safety. The following sections deal with the various contraceptives that have been tested during the past two decades or are currently under trial.

you know that true Tropicana, i remember when i lived in jamaica 90-94 it was all the rage for these women to go get their "injection" they loved that stuff. got it for $100JA at the clinic which is peanuts. but they were all gung ho for it because of the relative *ease* of (at that time) going only once every three months.

So is the problem with the contraceptives themselves, or is it with the governments who allow poor women to be used in trials without their informed consent? Is it the responsibilty of the local government to prevent contraceptives that have been banned in developed countries from being used in their own countries? In some countries hormonal forms of contraception are available over the counter, no monitoring required. It boggles the mind.

phoenix there are no easy answers are there? we cry about over population ray, ray ray..... but what are the alternatives so provide these women with the EDUCATION they need to make EDUCATED choices?

on the news last nite this AA woman ...apparently had a stroke from (what they think) the patch....cho....what is the name of it again ?.....anyway...you now what I am talking about...the Birth Control Patch....

having investigated the availability of Mirena in canada i can sadly report that it costs $500.00 - it is not covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) and it is not covered under my private insurance plan [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

also my doctor would not insert it because she "doesn't feel comforable doing it" - because she doesn'thave much experience with it and referred me to a birth control centre

well sue...if the thing is good for five years...that's still only 8 bucks a month...sounds reasonable to me.

yu rite yes - the cost is prohibitive to me based on my reaction to *trhings* in the past i'd hate to pay or have someone pay and haffi tek it out after one month [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] so i'm trying to an alternative, but will let you know after thursday what that is.
