Den mi stawt tink, Jamaica ppl resourceful enuh. Specially if yuh grow a country.

Mi memba mi granny use to put cawn stick a door fi dry and den use it fi washin brush.

Wi use to use coconut broom fi sweep di yawd.

Mama would use ole paint pan and rubba tire cut in half fi plant flowas.

I remember grannie making coconut oil from scartch; used for cooking; also castor oil which was used for hair oil and for wash-out.

Broom - house broom was "ballard bush" cut early in the morning with the dew still on dem. Yard broom was rosemary bush cut and tied together sweep the yard clean clean.

"Corning" of leff ova meat - beef, pork, tripe, etc. and putting them in de "bankra" that heng over the fire in the outside kitchen.

Floor: The bark of the logwood tree - boil the bark until they get very dark and use this to stain the floor and then polish with bees wax and shine wid di handmade coconut brush. Don't even tink bout trowing aweh di banana peel dem when wi bwoil tuff food . Shi put ie dung fi it cool an mix wid di hog food.

and dat same milk carton box is also used as a ball for our 'baseball' ( not the one you play with bats) at break and lunch time at school..Just stuff it up so it get a little smaller and tough enough fi give it one bax way dung di school field...ahhhh the memories...

Reminds me of our using the smaller cartons as cricket balls. Crumple them up, tie a string around (it if we had any string), and we were good to go. Of course the games only lasted as long as the carton held up [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

Then of course there were the old tires that we used as swings. Bore a hole at the top, run the rope through it, tie a big knot at the bottom of the rope, and hang on for dear life when pushed.

The box ball would definitely last a while before it started coming apart at the corners. Then we would just stuff it with paper, tie it up again, and go a little bit more. Remember, two sides had to bat [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

Speaking of the bat, it was made from a piece of board that somebody "shape up" or from the same coconut something you mentioned. Had no idea it was called "coconat bongka" \o/
