Nattylub, I got to admire you for trying....and love you back for loving de jamaican language and for equating it to what many English speakers say that the French language is the language of love.

The only way i learned any other language was practice with those who already know it (along with reading & studying)... I know i'm very new at it...i just dont want anyone to be offened when i don't get it right!

I went to "fully loaded"(a reggae concert held at helshire beach) some years ago and heard people from Paris, France(first time in Jmaica), from Japan(first time as well),Hispanic from New York and from Germany all performing onstage and speaking near flawless patois.
My mouth was open the entire time. They understood and performed it well because they mainly were 'sound guys' who play only reggae or dancehall. of course the ultimate was 'black chiney' a group out of florida but I later found out that they were (chinese)jamaicans who moved to florida.

I learned Patois and the Jamaican accent by listening to Linton Kwesi Johnson and Mutabaruka in the 80s. Since they talk more than sing or toast, and rather slower too, although the way it is on the records is often a lot more simplified than when Jamaicans are talking...

I have not learned it perfectly, but I have been mistaken for a Jamaican amomg Jamaicans abroad. Some said I sounded like a Jamaican who has not been home for too long. I always mention that I am NOT Jamaican. It is not right to impersonate.

Me, I like the lingo ka it sweet, and also, it helps in certain situations to keep an intruder at bay. As a Rastaman Babylon always waan kno wey we do, how we do an ting.

I agree that there is a large part of talking "perfect patois" which has to do with having the Jamaican experience. I think that a bonafide Jamaican will always tell that there is a likkle somepn amiss.

I know a jamaican here in Canada who lived with the father of her child for years and didn't know that he was from st vincent and not jamaica.
his patois is absolutely perfect and he's been here in canada for over 20 years.
