Being a Finnish student studying English and different English-speaking cultures, I'd like to have a Jamaican-American perspective.. My question goes: What's it like to be Jamaican-American? Any thoughts, opinions or whatever about the subject, be free to tell me anything about it. Thanks!

Hello everyone. We, justalittlerain and I, are basically making a presentation on Jamaican- American culture. The topic is broad because we basically know nothing of it, exept what we have read online. What we are really ibnterested in (to mention few things) is; Are there some kinds of concentrations of Jamaicans in a certain areas of America and where (And why), Some history such as why the Jamaicans first came to America, and of culture, of course, do you feel Americans or Jamaicans or Jamaican-Americans and how the main population relates to you... Stuff like that.

So basically we have no first-hand experience on Jamaicans on Jamaican-Americans so it would be really great if U could give us a hand.

Tell us some more about who you are:

- what are you studying? is this for a masters? PhD?
- what do you know about Jamaica so far?
- have you ever visited Jamaica?
- why the interest in Jamaican-Americans as opposed to Jamaicans in other countries?

Don't take it personally if people are reluctant to respond to your queries. For one thing people are a bit wary of strangers, even more so online and your questions are quite broad.

Hi and thanks for responding!

We're studying at a kind of an adult education college in Finland and we're studying English as a major.
We have this American cultural studies -course going on, and we have a school project on Jamaican-American people.
We know some basic stuff about the relations between Jamaica and the U.S but, nothing about the culture.
And no, we've never visited Jamaica.
We're interested in the subject because of the people being a minority and we have no experience on that.
It's also such a different culture compared to ours, so we'd love to learn as much as possible about it.

Need to add..:
I myself am more interested in (dunno the englis word for this) ... creolis? And you got a whole own language. (Patois, right?)
I'm interested in Jamaica in special, of cource because of the reasons justalittlerain just reported there, but mainly because of the language and it's influence on your culture and your wiews of the world.

I know these might be a bit personal questions we're asking but it really felt like a better idea to ask someone who really know about these things than just readin' statitics.

I am sure there was Jamaicans at James Town...; Another Jamaican was Denmark Vissey... Who led a slave uprising despite being a freeman... The US first Sectary of State Hamiliton was from the Carribean though not Jamaica.... Colorado was black and might have been from Jamaica....

Jamaicans can be found ALL OVER the North America. In the US, you will find at least 3 in every state [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Florida has a large population of Jamaicans (perhaps due to proximity and weather) as does New York (perhaps because many Jamaicans consider Brooklyn to be "just like Jamaica")
