It always amazes me that US broadcasts seem to ignore Jamaica but talk about Haiti and Cuba.
Hello everyone! I am brand new and have been following the posts for Dennis. I am glad to hear that all who write her are in good and safe conditions. I have some freinds and extended family over there so it is nice to hear that all is ok for now. And that things weren't as bad as originally thought.
I just wanted to say that US news is about the worse news in the world. Only talk about what is important to them. If a country has something to offer or is a threat to them, they talk about it. So, I suppose in a very strange way... it's a good thing they don't talk about Jamaica... that means they will not go invade or do the ridiculous things that happens to the other countries where they have something to loose. Of course, that is my humble opinion. I pray all in Ja remain safe.
I hope to keep posting here with all of you! And thank you for the link to Power 106. It has kept my nerves down. My friend should be back on Sunday, if the airports open. It will be harded to get out because I hear they only letting planes in and not out and my friend has to take plane from JA to Miami and the hurricane is headed those ways. People may not be able to leave in awhile. Anybody have news about that or where infotmation can be found? Thanks!
Barosa, I agree it was NICE of Cuba. For all that some of the world pooh-pooh's Cuba and the way it's run, sometimes they do well. eg last year during Ivan, as I told a Negril friend - if Fidel says MOVE you gotta move, no choosing to stay in your own place. And they didn't lose anybody. Some advantages in that method, imo.
Yes "Little" if I may, I have to agree. There is much benefit from a "maximum" leader who is seen to be fair by his people... My comments were pointing to the fact that Cuba may be Jamaica's truest or best friend in the region... So far Jamaica is lucky, we Jamaicans can only hope that Dennis spares Cuba and Fidel much misery, we pray! ray:

Skye: we're okay here in Mobay. Had lts of water laying in the yard but overnight it was absorbed. Some water was flowing to the street and away from the homes. Lost power yesterday for almost 5 hours. The rains have stopped but the sky is ominous. Like something more is coming, although the sun has shown itself but with an eerie cast to it's light. I haven't checked the maps to see what's going on.
Very heavy flooding on the east coast. The rivers have overflowed their banks and in some places water is flowing through people's houses. Some are stranded and can't get help. Of course, Jamaican Government is not doing much at all. Many people were begging for help on the tv newscast. There were several children saved from one home that was flooded, even a cute plump baby that must have been only a few months old. Clarenden seems to be the hardest hit.
I'm so happy to hear that jamaica was spared for the most part from dennis.
I went to church and prayed that everyone in the carib. would be alright!
I can't wait to see all of my jamaican friends in a week and im so glad you are all safe.

Some truth here, but the Government now claim they have a plan:

Compulsory evacuation being contemplated

The authorities are looking at the possibility of implementing a compulsory evacuation programme for Jamaica.
The proposed system, which would be based on the Cuban model, would give the Government the authority to remove persons in communities which are threatened by natural disasters.
Speaking on Beyond the Headlines Friday, Director-General of ODPEM, Dr. Barbara Carby said implementation of compulsory evacuation would require legislative changes.
“We are looking very seriously at the whole matter of compulsory evacuation. We would need to put something into the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management Act that will give the authorities the power to escort you out of a dangerous area. I am worried that if we continue along the path we are going on we are going to lose many lives one day and that is certainly not desirable," Dr. Carby says.

I cannot prove this, but I know in my heart the prayers are what moved that eye a little more off shore. It happened with Ivan and now on a smaller scale with Dennis. Thank you MBC and all Jamaicans and friends who prayed for us. And have a great time next week. Hope to meet you someday.

A tree falling on one house as against 2 to 20 looters in a forced evacuation area, doesn`t require Govt to forcibly enforce by law people to leave their homes against their will.
Govt. can barely provide security under normal weather conditions, why are they thinking that following the Cubans model will work and make people happy and safe.
In Cuba the liklihood of looters raiding evacuated homes is unlikely, unlike in Jamaica where it is more likely.

i am trying to respect this thought, but come on, JM ... you saying the folks in caymans, cuba, haiti and the states are unable to pray as hard as those in ja?
makes my stomach turn.
if i prayed, i would have prayed for all of them ... including cuba where 20 ppl died.
