Some Portmore residents heed call to evacuate

There are signs that residents of some communities in Portmore are responding to calls to evacuate.
Since Wednesday night, Mayor of Portmore George Lee and other persons have been appealing to persons who live close to the sea to move to shelters.

While few persons heeded the calls Wednesday, Mayor Lee told the News Centre Thursday morning that more persons are gearing up to leave their homes.

Despite the Mayor's confidence, checks with residents in various flood prone communities of Portmore reveal that several are still not convinced they need to evacuate.

The fisherfolk at the Causeway and Port Henderson fishing villages in Portmore have so far failed to heed the warnings of municipal police to evacuate.

Many of them had to flee the destructive seas during hurricane Ivan, but are nonetheless content to wait in their fragile wooden huts until the last minute.

Others at the Causeway fishing beach are determined not to leave unless they can take all their earthly possessions with them.

With a real fear of looters stealing their expensive boats and fishing gear in their absence, they have taken a philosophical approach saying they would rather the sea took their property, than their fellow man.

In Greater Portmore, many residents had battened down and were building sandbag barricades at their gates for fear of canals overflowing.

However, in Edgewater which sits right on the edge of the sea, some residents say they will not be moved.

Across town, the attitude of residents in the flood prone Adair Drive in the Waterford Division of Portmore was decidedly less calm.

They are on the verge of panic because of a blocked drain that runs parallel to their street.

They accosted the PNP Councillor of the Division as he drove along the gully, assessing the situation.

But Councillor Errol Lyn had no real good news.

The residents may find themselves out of luck in their search for shelter if their homes are flooded, as the nearby Waterford High School, in which they sought shelter during hurricane Ivan, remains closed.

Meanwhile a team from the Clarendon Office of the Ministry of Social Security is in the Portland Cottage Community carrying out an assessment of persons who have so far been displaced as a result of the heavy rain.

Parish Manager Delroy Palmer told RJR News that the main purpose of the visit was to deliver bedding supplies to persons in shelters.

217 persons were taken to four shelters in the Portland Cottage and Mitchell Town areas.

Spiral bands of Dennis now affecting Jamaica

Several sections of the county are now being affected by spiral bands associated with Hurricane Dennis which is now a category two hurricane.
Already residents of some communities are being affected by strong winds.

Callers from Irish Town in St. Andrew say they have been without electricity as heavy winds resulted in an explosion which disrupted electricity supplies.

Other areas which are being affected by storm force winds include, Roselle in St. Thomas and the Palisadoes strip in Kingston.

Checks with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management have revealed that more than 600 persons have moved to temporary shelters.

Prime Minister PJ Patterson has again appealed to Jamaicans to take all the necessary precautions in light of the threat posed by Hurricane Dennis.

The Prime Minister noted that latest weather forecast indicate that Hurricane Dennis has drifted further away from Jamaica but warned that the country would still be affected.

He also warned that the police are prepared to prevent acts of looting and violence while the storm is passing Jamaica.

And residents of Hagley Gap and Penlyne Castle in St. Thomas will have to wait until the passage of the hurricane before they receive supplies from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, ODPEM.

Thursday morning Member of Parliament for Western St. Thomas James Robertson called on the ODPEM to airlift supplies to flood damaged communities in his constituency which have cut off since Wednesday due to flooding and landslides.

However, Head of the ODPEM, Dr. Barbara Carby told the RJR News Centre Thursday morning that the situation at this time does not amount to an emergency.

Dr. Carby says persons in emergency situations should call the ODPEM at 928-5111-4 or 119.

What would we do without Ja.com? We all seem to rally together, share information, and understand one anothers concern. We don't really need much news/media coverage, collectively we compile more information than any news source could ever give.
