It's interesting that he said this within the context of what appears to be spiritual sickness and not physical illness. He was questioned why he was hanging out with the people labled as sinners and evil and thus the reply. This had nothing to do with physical illness which he often cured as per the Gospels. Why seek a phyisician when the "Great Physician" is at your disposal?

Expectations,

Today's world create expectations of happiness based on sucess factors, get a degree and you will be happy, get a promotion, a good job, a good home, appointed to the choir, etc.

One of the problems of the modern church is that we portray a culture where everything is seen through rose coloured glasses, there should be no maritial problems in church because we are christians, etc.

Therefore those who have these problems do not have enough faith or are just carnal or...

The truth is that persecution is a part of the christian life, a messenger from the devil was said to buffett Paul. Doubt plagued Thomas life, Peter was stricken by despair, he denied Christ even though walking on water.

There was despair in David, even John the Baptist was in doubt of who Jesus was.

Sin brings with it fear, the angels first salutation is "fear not".

Christians will not live above fear in this flesh, they will challenge it but there will always be the "valley of the shadow" we will have to face down our fears with faith continually.

Its part of the christian experience, but I do believe love lifts us from the valley to the peaks of sucess, but it will always be there for each battle we never win the war till we are Glorified.

That's called being religious. Jesus performed many miracles to prove He was whom He said He was; the Son of God. Without tangible proof, the claim had no substance. We see the same principle throughout the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, signs following believers; confirmation of the Word. Notwithstanding the power of prayer, those who are phyiscally sick need a physician. Why else would men and women be blessed with the abilities to become doctors if not to tend to those who are sick, Christians included?

And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. - II Chronicles 16:12

Sounds rather disparaging as if he should have known better than to seek out doctors as opposed to God for the healing of his diseased feet.

IMO, depression has absolutely nothing to do with being "all together" and everything to do with chemistry.

I didn't always hold this opinion, however a bout of depression successfully treated by medication changed my mind (literally [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] .

...and since we're in this forum, it's interesting to note that while we can't explain something as common as depression because we don't know enough about the human mind, some are disappointed that that same human mind can't prove the existence of, or think on the same level as, its Creator.

Or perhaps it's the weakness of the human mind that makes this so [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I purposely put the topic here to discuss the myths about Christians being immuned to certain ailments such as depression. A pastor recently made the statement that depression is the number one illness among Christians.
