English Translation
I was walking down the road, when I almost got knocked over by this inconsiderate driver who was driving carelessly on the road. I was so furious and had a few choice words for the driver! It so happened that a kind lady passerby who witnessed the almost tragic occurence, stopped to find out if I was okay. I assured her I was alright. She then proceeded to ask me if I was born in America because she detected an accent. I told her I was born and raised in Jamaica. The lady exclaimed " Oh! I was born and raised in Jamaica too". Dear Lord! That was so hilarious I had to chuckle. She sounded so funny with that accent of hers. I wondered why she had to put on 'air' on her manner of speaking. I shook my head, and could not help but marvel at why some people feel that they need to put on an 'air' when they are in a foreign country.

dry up-dry-up--not necessarily 'dried up' as in something lacking moisture, but its a way to describe something (food especially) that is not 'pleasant to the eyes'. In this case, maybe the patty was too small, not enough 'yellow' but a pasty look, not enough crust, looks like it was days old etc--a myraid of reasons [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]... I have heard phrase refered to the way a person looks " How yu look soh dry-up?" meaning the individual is not really looking that good..not nice to say especially if you are impeccably dressed [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img].

I am finding out that the translation process is a little difficult for me too (but hilarious I must admit), even as a Jamaican. You lose that 'flair'/'panache' that comes with the stated phrase. You can say one word in patois that is so loaded, when translated, it takes about one to two sentences to really explain what is being said, how its being said, and the feeling in that moment it was stated. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img] THat is the best way I could describe it..It is not just words/conversation, but words you have to feel in order to understand it fully. Pretty interesting..I am intrigued as well..
