Dr. Kevin Brown is released on $50,000 bail after medical exam complaint by teen
The eldest son of Premier Ewart Brown has been arrested in a police sting for the alleged sexual assault of a patient.
Dr. Kevin Brown, a 37-year-old general practitioner and one of Premier Brown's four sons, was arrested on Tuesday morning and released on $50,000 bail in a case that has been drawn the attention of the Los Angeles media.
His arrest was sparked by a complaint in June of 2007 by an 18-year-old woman who said she was inappropriately touched during a medical exam.
Police then launched a sting operation in which a female uncover police officer posing as a patient "was also inappropriately touched during a medical exam," according to a press release issued by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
Police believe there may be additional victims or witnesses and are asking anyone with information about the case to come forward.
Good doctor
The younger Dr. Brown was described as a "really good doctor" by a medical assistant employed at the Crenshaw Expo Medical Centre where he practised, according to CBS television station KCAL.
Another woman, who spoke in Korean and had her comments translated in English, said he always "appeared to be a nice man and a popular doctor."
Yesterday, Premier Brown said in a release issued through his spokesman: "I have been in touch with him, he denies the charges and we trust that he will be exonerated."
LAPD detective Monica Cross told the Bermuda Sun Dr. Brown will be arraigned in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County on July 29.
A preliminary hearing to determine whether there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed would take place about two weeks later, she said.
The press release also said: "Detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Sex Crime Unit, resulting in the $50,000 warrant being issued and multiple felony and misdemeanor charges being filed.
"The charges against Dr. Brown relate to sexual battery by fraud and sexual exploitation by a physician. Dr. Brown was taken into custody without incident by Fugitive Warrant Section."
Dr. Kevin Brown was at the centre of controversy over the Department of Tourism's sponsorship of a celebrity poker tournament at the Los Angeles Playboy Mansion in May.
His charity, the Urban Health Institute of Los Angeles, was the beneficiary of the event.
Premier Brown attended the event, which was presided over by Playboy magnate Hugh Hefner, and donated prizes of three trips to Bermuda in partnership with Elbow Beach hotel. Hugh Hefner's famous bunny girls were also at the event.
Dr. Brown's decision to sponsor the three trips was criticized by the Opposition United Bermuda Party and others, but Dr. Brown stood by his decision, saying he would go back to the Playboy Mansion again.
Kevin Brown is married and has two young children, son Caleb and a daughter Kira. He's the child of a previous relationship of Dr. Brown's and was born, raised and schooled in the U.S..
He followed in his father's footsteps and attended Howard Medical School in Washington D.C, a historically black university, which is often dubbed the black Harvard.
He received a licence to practise in August 1998 and according to the Medical Board of California website, his licence is current and expires in 2010, and no actions, disciplinary or criminal, have been filed against him.
Grateful
In an interview with the Bermuda Sun in October 2006 when Ewart Brown was challenging Alex Scott for the post of PLP leader, Kevin Brown said of his father: "He's always been there for me. There were times when I was in school at Howard University when I wasn't sure if being a doctor was the career for me. I was very close to leaving medical school.
"It was the conversations I had with my dad that helped me focus on what I was doing and I'm very grateful to him for that."
Kevin Brown is the second son of Dr. Brown to have a brush with the law. Another son Maurice Pitt, who was born and raised in Bermuda, was in October 2006 serving time in a California jail. His youngest sons are Trey and Donovan, whom he had with second wife Priscilla.

I have known Dr Brown aproximately nine years because he treated my now deceased mother during that time. I found Dr. Brown to be a man and a doctor of high character and moral standards. Also during this time I found that Dr. Brown was a doctor that demonstrated a great concern for the well being of mankind and for poor people black or white. During my office visits I ony saw a doctor dedicated to his profession. Being a man of the clergy and a senior citizen, I beleive the charges against Dr. Kevin Brown are false and the truth will prevail.
