ALL systems are go for "The Caribbean Dream", which is the name given to the Caribbean Media Corporation's extensive coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games. This was revealed at a press conference held yesterday at what will become CMC's Olympic Centre, the Careenage Bar of the Hilton Barbados Hotel.
Speaking about the cost to put together a package which they plan to offer the region, Chief Operations Officer Errol Clarke said it will cost them over US$2 million. He mentioned that it was an expensive undertaking, however, at the moment, they have not received any support from any Caribbean government or non-governmental agency.
Clarke mentioned that they are offering the show to the Caribbean islands at a different rate, which ranges from US$20 000 to US$500 000.
The package is slated to be aired at three different time slots - 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.; 5 p.m.to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 1 p.m.
According to seasoned broadcaster and commentator Lance Whittaker, their coverage will be one of a difference, in that it will be shown live and not tape delayed.
It will also feature the Caribbean athletes regardless of the position they come in the event, as they seek to showcase the region's athletes.
The 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the 10 p.m. to 1 p.m. shows will mainly broadcast the live events, while the 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. will be highlights and analysis.
The CMC team that will be making the trip includes Whittaker and Hubert Lawrence, and they will be joined in China by reporters Jason Haper and Wayne Walker and a full technical crew, as they bring audiences across the Caribbean coverage of Caribbean athletes.
Also present at the press conference was the Chinese ambassador, His Excellency Liu Huanxing, who mentioned that Beijing, which has been the capital of China for over eight centuries, is ready for the Olympics.
With medal hopefuls from many of the islands in the region, it is expected that a great deal of interest will be generated at the world's greatest sporting event.
The CMC Olympic Centre will be established at the Hilton Barbados Hotel, where the Careenage Bar will become the ultimate sports bar, offering live broadcasts three times a day on a giant screen and in air-conditioned comfort.
In preparation for the coverage, CMC has released the "Caribbean Dream" jingle sung by John King, with promotional spots which include profiles on the Caribbean's leading Olympic contenders.
