By this Saturday, two hours before FSU's game against Maryland, New Jersey native Myron Rolle will find out if he is the recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship, which awards two students with scholarships to study at Oxford University in London. Then, it's off to a football game.
In the classroom setting, Rolle is turning heads with his academic accomplishments. The New York Times hints that his academic achievements were met with concerns from the Seminoles' coaching staff:
He graduated from Florida State in two and a half years with a degree in pre-med and a grade point average of 3.75. He is so studious that the Seminoles' defensive coordinator, Mickey Andrews, publicly criticized him for studying too much last year, saying it affected Rolle's preparation for football.
Washington Post columnist and ESPN host Michael Wilbon had this to say of Rolle in today's paper:
Rolle has the good sense to match his academic prowess, which is obviously considerable. The safety said at the time he was mildly disappointed in the coach, Mickey Andrews, and kept on doing what he does: playing football, studying and finding ways to make himself indispensable to his school and the communities it serves.
Rolle has Bahamian roots.
