VARADERO, Cuba (ACN) -- Canada's WestJet airline started operations to Cuba this Sunday, when the first flight of tour operator WestJet Vacations landed at the Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport in this city.
The Boing 737, with a 136 passenger capacity, was met at the airport terminal by officials of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR), who talked about the history and culture of the Cuban people as well of the natural beauties of Varadero, main sun and beach resort in the Caribbean nation.
Gregg Saretsky, Executive Vice-President of WestJet, thanked the officials for the welcome and said that with the experience they have on flights to the Caribbean, the trips to Cuba will be successful and will contribute to strengthen the commercial and cultural bonds between Cuba and Canada.
The WestJet Vacations tour operator will fly three times a week to Varadero, twice to Cayo Coco, in central Ciego de Avila province and once to Holguin.
Lazaro Moreno, MINTUR official in central Matanzas province, told ACN that Cuba had recently reached the 2 million visitor mark, while forecasting a good tourist season and that Varadero will complete a million visitors before the end of December.
The Canadian airline, founded in 2006, is aiming to transport 23,000 people to spend their vacations in Cuba during the high season (December through April).
Through the Juan Gualberto Gomez airport 30 airlines arrive every year, 60 percent of them from Canada, thus reaffirming that nation as the biggest tourist emitting market to Cuba.</span>
