So Canadas prime Minister Stephen Harper is considering easing the Immigration process for Haitian refugees.

so how does Canada intend on a) processing people when chances are they couldnt be issued OR EVEN HAVE a Haitian Passport or travel documents, identification

(b)background checks (dont forget-Haitis criminals are now roaming the streets freely)

and what exactly does Harper intend on doing with refugees from Haiti?

Today, the USA also announced that they have also relaxed restrictions for illegal aliens already here and deportation. I am not sure about incoming refugees though.

TPS: Haiti's illegal immigrants given temporary protection in US

The Department of Homeland Security said it would offer Haitians who were here illegally before Tuesday's earthquake temporary protected status (TPS). Haiti has 100,000 people living in the US illegally.

In a move supported by both Democrats and Republicans, the Obama administration Friday extended special protection to some 100,000 Haitians living illegally in the United States that keeps them from being deported.

The Department of Homeland Security said it would offer Haitian nationals, who were already here when Tuesday’s earthquake struck, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. That status, which would allow them to legally work, will not cover Haitians who flee their country following the devastating 7.0 quake that resulted in as many as 50,000 deaths and left its capital, Port-au-Prince, in ruins.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said it’s “tempting for people suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake to seek refuge elsewhere” but that “attempting to leave Haiti now will only bring more hardship to the Haitian people and nation.”

She also said returning illegal immigrants from Haiti would put their “personal safety&quot; at risk.

TPS is typically extended to immigrants from countries – such as El Salvador, Honduras, Somalia, and Nicaragua – where sudden conflict or disaster has prevented them from returning safely.

On Wednesday, US immigration officials temporarily halted the removal of some 30,000 illegal Haitians awaiting deportation. France, Canada, and the Dominican Republic are taking similar steps to ease their immigrations rules in light of the disaster.

“Extending this mantle of protection to struggling Haiti is not only appropriate, but a just, compassionate, and concrete step the United States can take toward alleviating the human suffering of the Haitian people,” wrote Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, in a letter to the White House.

Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar (R) supports the decision as well as does Sen. Bill Nelson (D) of Florida.

“This is the right thing to do. Haitian immigrants already in the U.S. will not only be able to make money to support themselves, but also to send remittances to their suffering families back in Haiti,” Senator Nelson said in a statement Friday.

Dan Stein, president of the conservative Federation for American Immigration Reform, told USA Today that he supports the move. He did say, however, that the TPS status should be terminated once the crisis is over.

Mark Krikorian, executive director for the Center for Immigration Studies, wrote on the conservative National Review Online that once TSP is granted, it often becomes amnesty. &quot;As far as I've been able to determine, not a single person who has ever been granted this 'temporary' status has later been deported.&quot;

Bahamas PM defends decision to release illegal Haitians

NASSAU, Bahamas – Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham has defended his government’s decision to release from detention, Haitians awaiting deportation after arriving here illegally.

“I believe this was the sensible and compassionate thing to do in the circumstances. I accept that any decision by my Government would be subject to criticism from certain quarters. That is democracy.But my colleagues and I – as well as the majority of right-thinking Bahamians – are deeply disappointed at the torrent of misinformation, prejudice and hard-heartedness that has spewed especially from the airwaves,” said Ingraham who left here today to attend the international donors meeting on Haiti in the Dominican Republic.

Haiti was struck by a powerful earthquake last Tuesday that left a trail of death and destruction. Many Caribbean countries have relaxed the immigration measures for Haitians entering the country following the earthquake.Ingraham reminded his critics that “the circumstances are that the Haitian homeland and especially their capital city has been devastated by the worst catastrophe in 200 years, with tens of thousands dead and more dying every day, with people starving, with infrastructure destroyed and with governmental agencies rendered impotent.

“It should be obvious that in these circumstances it is simply impossible to send undocumented Haitian nationals back to their homeland.”The Prime Minister said the sea port at Port-au-Prince is out of commission and the airport is clogged with as many as 200 flights a day.He said in addition, the United States have taken control of the airport at the request of the Haitian government and flights are being restricted to emergency and military flight connected with the ongoing emergency relief and recovery efforts.

“A Bahamian aircraft attempting to take undocumented Haitians into that situation or indeed into the smaller Haitian airport in Cape Haitien would most certainly be turned back and we would earn the scorn and condemnation of the civilised world.”He said that the United States and other countries with large numbers of undocumented Haitians have taken a similar policy decision and will also suspend repatriation and grant temporary status to Haitians facing repatriation.

“They have also, like us, made it clear that no new immigrants from Haiti will be allowed in. No one knows how long it will be before Haiti is restored to some semblance of normalcy and when repatriation flights from the Bahamas and other places will again be able to land and be processed in Port-au-Prince.“So it makes sense and it is compassionate not to keep them incarcerated indefinitely,” said Ingraham, urging Bahamians to “be generous in their donations to our near neighbour”.

Well they could find a place in the restaurant and catering industry, canadians could soon be benefitting from that all important supplement to their diet,...the good old MUD PIE.

They could train them to become doctors and professors as some of the boat people have become in America.

btw, many could be heading to Jamaica.
