Doing it without anesthetic. is not bad, but to close a wound without antibiotic, is more dangerous that to bandage it without suturing it.
Since it can be cleaned after, but the danger is what happen to a closed wound that i s infected.
If they have tooth paste that is the most effective anesthetic and antibiotic available.
It is more effective that pure antibiotic. But who would tell thes people this??Always carry a small tube of white toothpaste. I
f you get injuried. even if you can clean it completely well, stuff some of the tooth paste in the wound.
it will relieve the pain and destroy the bugs.
will also prevent reinfection.
If you are out in the field, and have nothing .
If there is lime stone clean marl.
heat it in fire to sterilize it. Then cover the wound wit it.
It will not anesthesia it, but it will kill the infection, The important thing is to heat it first then as it cool you use it.

So if the food need to be mixed or water added, they won't be able to read and understand it.

Some Ration packs are not very edible but I would think they would at least try it.

Historic problem with Aid I would think they would at least drop instructions in native dialect before they dropped the supplies.

US does not have that facility. And i will wager that they couldn't get it in each package. In such short time.
The last time the US tried to translate to Haitian creole, they got it in something closer to Jamaican patois.

And that was done by a contractor they paid to do it for the Census.
The Haitians didn't understand it and then we found out the mixed up Jamaican for Haitian some how.

u know the US has always been clueless wen it come to odda countries...dat is y dem did land in Grenada in winter gear n almost died of heatstroke

it is fruitless not to mention moronic to drop dried food products in a natural disaster zone...the most basic reasoning being that water sources r usually contaminated so di people naw go ha clean water to rehydrate said dry food...

an if u ha buildings down like in an earthquake how u expek dem fi light fire, put pon awn and cook...

bloody heck..dem need to drop crackers, cheese,water, dried fruit etc...boost, ensure, tings like dat dat people can eat on the go until those on the ground can put up soup kitchens etc...

plus u can be sure that the instructions r in English and French and the majority of the poor speak Creole so di French is juss as alien as the English to dem

I wonder. The article said water and "ready to eat meals." The items they're talking about don't require literacy or even any preparation other than opening them. If I'm starving, and some ready to eat food drop from the sky in front of me, I don't need to know the language on the label to know I should go ahead and eat it. The more I think about it, I would have to go with 'shock'.

Just Because the call it ready to eat does not mean it does not need some sort of mixing.
That is how MREs which is meals ready to ear.
but you have to add water and pull a string or open a Port and chemical reaction cause it to heat, and mix the food then it is ready to eat.
The re is not canned goods, and stuff.
It always need some prep or the other irrespective of how little prep it need, if they don't know how to do it they will simply taste it and throw it away.
This has happened many times.
It happened during the Tsunami.
You go with shock because you don't understand what shock is. It is temporary.
this is days after the disaster, the whole crown would not be suffering shock so many days after the disaster to the point where they open the food and too shocked to eat it.
that is illogical.
The human body cannot survive shock for so many hours. They would bedead.
Since during shock, a lot of your systems are completely shutdown and the rest is functioning at their maximum, just to save your life.
this cannot go on for long,or it destroy the system sthat are shut down, from lack of oxygen and injure the systens that are working overtime.
I mean who would really come up with such a decision after any amount of thought??

the distribution system is hideous

where are the blue tents (housing)

seems like they are just throwing food making the survivors grovel like animals

part of the rescue needs to be restoring human dignity

Ther is a fear of setting up distribution point where ther is not security.
And security is lacking. Since the people had bad experience with Us military and they are afraid of tension. So they should have dropped the food 2 days ago, by now they would be able to distribute.
Since the demand would have reduced.
So it all work down to strategy and timing.
They Waited too long to start, and and now the people are desperate enough to charge the source of the supply.

some emphasis needs to be placed on moving the people out of the city into the less populated areas

so "camps" can be set up and ordered restored within the city

with mobs of people converging on the city there is no way to maintain control,security or cleanup

the food they are throwing are energy biscuits - where's the rice and peas

and the dominican republiic seems awfully quiet these days

Thought for the today...

A few weeks ago I took a train on my way to the airport. Due to an incident the train had to terminate early, and alternative transport took atleast 30minutes to arrive.

Scene: people poured out onto the streets, ended up blocking the streets, thereby hampering the relay process - despite being repeatedly being shouted at to get out of the way...When the first transport arrived, there was chaos with jostling to point of people substaining injuries

This was in a 1stworld developed country...where the potential loss was not life threatening, but a replaceable flight.

Point is - ugly side of human nature, not restricted to Haitians...some crumble under less.
Listening from the proverbial 'comfort of armchair', I also hear many stories of resilience.

Also read newspaper reports earlier that a young man employed by Wyclef's charity was killed by looters...

Please save good prayers for what the Haitians are going through...that your creator brings them the stoicism they need at this difficult time.

Ther is no need to do that really. All they need to do is to select suitable large and convenient areas, wher they could set up armed and protected distribution areas, and use helicopters to drop the supplies.
then distribute it from there.
Since if you send people out in the rural areas, the re is no way for them to eat.
This is not a rich country.
The is no working distribution system All the stores will be out of supplies no short order.
The gas sstations will be out of gas.
and no way to even move normal foodstuff since it usually come in thorgh the wharf
The wharf that is inoperable The distributors are destroyed. The banking system is non functional.
Nothing is working You can;'t send people out in the woods to rob other people of what they don't have themselves.

if anything, shock and unfamiliarity. MREs, which I would be willing to bet is what were dropped, are indeed ready to go right out of the pouch.

you can heat them, but it's not necessary, they are just as the acronym suggests- MEALS READY to EAT. you don't have to mix them with anything other than what they come with- sauces etc are all included.

to be honest, they may have looked like they didn't know what to do with them- at first. But I'm sure the issue was resolved very quickly.

the real problem is that relief just can't magically appear. it obviously takes a lot of time to put these things in place and the co-ordination required is more than likely mind bogglingly problematic when there are no roads, no electricity, no real equipment, etc.

people are trying to dig their relatives out with butter knives and fingers.

which is why the more and more I think about it, it makes the most sense what the gentleman that Tuff Gong quoted suggested. A small fleet of hospital/aid ships maintained at sea for just such emergencies, equipped like what the USS Carl Vinson is outfitted with- helicopters.

that is the ones they give the military now.

usually th refugees, get the ones that is actually from prior stocks. Not the normal military rations.
and they seem to b from Vietnam days designed .
you add water and it automatically heat the packetband you eat it.
the taste my not be familiar to the people either,.
