I actually read through this entire thread (without looking at the images). What RichD said back there was that with the speed of news via Internet, the delivery of news is changing. It is difficult to compare even relatively recent events, like Katrina, for e.g., to Haiti as technology has changed so rapidly and is now relatively cheaper than before. It seems everyone has a cell phone with video camera.

I knew a guy who was born in Alabama. He used to work for ABC and was stationed in Asia. He also extensively visited Jamaica, Cuba and lately parts of Mexico, when he became a truck owner/driver.

Shortly before he Katrina he visited New Orleans (another place he had traveled to extensively), he showed me some pictures of a Cemetery in New Orleans. He explained as I have heard before that folks in New Orleans buried their dead above ground.

Anyway during the explanation he told me the black folks specially gangs controlled a certain cemetery and if white folks would go into it they would shoot at them. I said I didn't believe it and he insisted it was true. He also went on to explain what life was like in some of the wards and it sounded like hell, but the folks were not in a hurry to leave their homes.

After the storm I was listening to NPR this American Life, one of the stories featured a lady who told a really gruesome tale of the authorities blocking survivors and even shooting at some. Included in the narrative was a description of how divided blacks and whites were before the storm.

A few months after the storm I met a refugee family, they didn't want to talk much about what exactly had happened but the conclusion was they were glad for the storm, because it helped them make a decision to finally get out of New Orleans. They said something was happening bad in New Orleans and something catastrophic had to happen to change it.

In the end the media will never be able to capture the full gravity of the real situation and will always accused of sensationalizing the bits and pieces that they manage to stumble across.

Prexactly! If some graphic footage is not on the News outlets, just hop on over to video sites which can become viral in a matter of seconds. Technology has its blessing and curse. In the past...way in the past...something like the Asian Tsunami would have been some distant news we would have heard about and only the imaginative would conjure up images of what they could perceive from descriptive written words. Now with everyone and their grandmother having video cameras, digital cameras WITH video, the access to HIGH speed internet and a million ways to transmit footage, EVERYTHING is magnified, driven home and sobering.

funny enuff the thought ran across my mind this mawning wen i saw a picture of a baby sleeping on top of a very stiff form...it brought to mind the reports of live people sleeping next to dead ones an i thought how differently it would be if these were white people..seriously...u would have the bold capitals of 'disturbing pictures' etc...

sarry but dere it is...the thought came to me fi real...i think they can show all that they do because if u think on it, weneva any body seeking to show poverty, it is always a minority shown....the various religious groups spring to mind wid dem ads for donations all the time...

so i guess people dont feel di said way wen is a minority as dem do to see dem own white faces reflected in such ads..who knows...

but i will say i am expecting that picture wid di lady wid wat seem to be locs half buried in rubble wid har face white wid dust, to win the Pulitzer Prize wen dat come run, ala the naked Vietanmese chick running while on fire and the blue-eyded Afghani girl from dat Soviet -Afghan conflict...

As you said, there is nothing else to show, any where the cameras point in this calamity, there are mostly corpses...I don't care for the sensationalism, but I believe that they are showing the graphic for many reasons especially to wrench at the hearts of those who plundered Haiti and to let the others cough up some serious dough and send volunteers to help...<span style="font-style: italic">

A picture is worth more than a thousand words..</span>

All who robbed Haiti, may the images haunt them for many moons to come..

Thanks Tg for those pics that showed what Journalism can do and has done...there is nothing new under the sun.

Mutty, I think the points raised by Peasie and yourself re technology are cogent. The capture, transmission and publishing of images from far flung third world countries is far far easier with digital, cellular and satellite technology and this has undoubtedly contributed to the flood of images available to editors.

It is <span style="font-style: italic">how</span> the images are being used that I was thinking about.

no argument dat whites r themselves victims of poverty...for this reason it is even more telling that u always seem to see a darker hue minority being showcased....

dat fact is juss a fact of advertising for charity n it is not a dig at wite vs blk TG so do betta dan dat...r u eena one of ur moods..i can understand dat being bi-polar miself...

i heard on another broadcast dat her children were there wid har but they were buried under the rublle...juss looking at her i though she was a youngster herself...

The <span style="font-style: italic">how</span> will touch whoever it touches as hearts are like fields of variety. For me, such pictures just drives hoe how lucky I am, how privileged I am and how much I HATE to know humans are suffering. It makes me want to help, share, be more caring, concerned. It produces empathy and sympathy in me but that's ME. For another, it may be some sadistic joy or it may not even move them. Those responsible for the showing of these things may have ulterior motives ranging from ratings (money) to a genuine concern to get the suffering out there to play upon the guilt of others - the &quot;white man's guilt&quot; perhaps. Who knows.

LOL I am not BiPolar trust me, I just see where 99% of the arguments seems to end up all the time and a lot of the purveyors totally unwilling to consider other evidence, even when it placed in front of them.
It would be hard to wave a camera around Haiti without seeing death and destruction and if it was not covered, the media would be raked over the coals for lack of coverage.
