CBS News Alleges Feed the Children Inflated Claims of Haiti Aid
- Feed the Children is responding to a CBS News report alleging the Oklahoma-City base charity exaggerated claims about its work in Haiti.
A CBS News investigation reports the charity inflated claims about its help in Haiti. In online email messages and on its web site, the charity claimed donations funded a huge camp in Haiti, providing medical relief for 12,000 people.
But CBS reports the camp was set up by local monks and nuns, not Feed the Children. Their investigation also asserts doctors treated fewer patients than claimed and the charity reportedly wasn't feeding anybody there.
Feed the Children also made claims that the UN chose them "to distribute food and milk for the entire camp," but officials for the UN said those claims were false, according to the CBS News report.
"We will certainly look into the difference of opinion as to exactly how much help we're providing and exactly who is involved with it," said Tony Sellars, Feed the Children Spokesperson.
Feed the Children released a statement regarding CBS's report. Part of the statement read, "In the month since the earthquake we have received and distributed more than $12 million dollars in supplies, including nearly $5 million dollars in food. This equates to 80 truckloads of relief so far or almost two million pounds of supplies. Because of our experience, we were asked to provide medical assistance and supplies at a camp designed for more than 12,000 people. We are currently providing shelter and milk for children and families in that camp. We're proud of the work we've done and we plan to continue."
