Six Haitian children are now in the care of the Haitian government after four American women bringing them to the United States were stopped and questioned by Haitian authorities. Among the women was Sarah Thacker of Minnesota. She went to Haiti to bring home her newly adopted son, but found herself facing accusations that her paperwork was falsified, according to reports. Authorities did not arrest Thacker or the three other women, but questioned them about their attempt to bring the six orphans to the United States. The incident comes on the heels of 10 American missionaries detained in January for trying to take 33 Haitian orphans across the border to the Dominican Republic. Eight of the 10 Americans have been released; two are still being held.
In the latest incident, the women were at the Port-au-Prince airport with the children getting ready to board a private plane on Saturday when a group of Haitians surrounded them, accusing them of child trafficking. The men charged that a document bearing the signature of Haiti's prime minister was a forgery.
The women were detained for eight hours while the children were put in a state-run nursery, reports said. The U.S. Embassy immediately spoke with Haitian officials, and the women were released-.
