Muslim bride

TW: Can you tell us the main aspects of a Muslim wedding ceremony?
The main components of the Muslim marriage include the proposal (offer) and acceptance by the bride and the groom in the presence of witnesses, and the payment of the Mahr (dowry). After the couple has been married, there is a Khutbah (sermon) by the officiating Imam and the Walimah (reception) that follows.
TW: What are some typical gifts that are given to family members and/or the bride or groom?
The groom and his family is responsible for presenting the bride with a Mahr (dowry). This can be anything from money, jewellery, land or even animals!
TW: What were the main items you had to source for yourself for your wedding attire?
I had to source my entire wardrobe - wedding dress, hijab, veil, tiara, shoes and jewellery.
TW: What factors did you consider when making your final choice for attire?
In the search for my wedding dress, I had to either choose between having a gown made or buying one ready-made. My gown had to be white, long, fully covering, and with long sleeves. The disadvantage with a ready-made gown was that most of the gowns that I saw didn't have sleeves, let alone long sleeves, which is compulsory for the Muslim woman. I was however a bit apprehensive about having a gown made, partially because I wasn't finding any dress material that I liked, and also because I was worried about spending so much money to have a dress made, only to be disappointed with the outcome. I ended up buying a ready-made gown with a trane, which I removed from the dress and used to make the sleeves. Extra material from the trane was also used to "fill in" the back and neckline of the dress, which were both low. My dress was made of white embroidered organza in a ball-gown style with long bell-sleeves. It was bought locally and customized to attach long bell sleeves.
TW: Did you rent, buy or borrow your wedding jewellery?
I bought all of my wedding jewellery.
TW: What type of jewellery did you wear ( costume jewellery, genuine or a combination)?
I wore a combination of costume and genuine.
