12-year-old boy gets set for college
Just when most pre-teens are preparing themselves for the challenges that lie ahead in high school, Kevin Rolle is getting ready for college. And he is only 12 years of age.
The 4.0, seventh grade Saint Andrew's student asked his mother if he could apply to the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) in Jamaica, where she is presently pursuing a doctorate degree in educational administration, through its long distance education programme. He said at firs his mother laughed at his idea. However, she eventually warmed up to it and agreed to give it a shot.
"I have always been a 4.0 student all of my life. And although I am a little young, I know that I can handle going off to college. After I left Bahamas Academy and began grade seven at Saint Andrew's, the work became very boring for me, because the work they were doing I had already passed. So, I asked my mother if I could apply to the university where she went," he said.
He added that he did not need his high school diploma to apply to the university, because he did exceptionally well on an SAT exam.
"I took my SAT exam and got a score of 970. So, my mother and I sent in an application to the university along with a profile. About three or four weeks ago they sent me an acceptance letter," he explained. "I didn't need a high school diploma to go to the university because I have an SAT score that is above 700. My SAT scores reflect a score that is higher than a high school diploma."
According to Kevin, his parents, Michael King and Joan Rolle are very proud of his accomplishments. He added that his mother, who is a teacher and the owner of the school, Cherub Christian Academy, is quickly learning to cope with the fact that her 12-year-old will be off to university in September.
"My mother is proud of me in a way, but she is still getting over the fact that her only child is going off to college in September," he said.
He added that he believes he has been successful at achieving his goal because he never forgets to pray. Moreover, he said that he finds joy in the quest for knowledge.
"Most of the time I am either inside studying, reading a book or doing something educational. I am also taking an online math and grammar course, with a community college in Canada. But, my hobbies also include swimming. I love learning new things," said Kevin.
According to this bright Bahamian student, his parents and the head officials the university had some concerns about his age. However, he added that they have all decided to give him a chance, because of his mental maturity.
As a full-time student at the university, he said he will major in theology with a minor in criminal law. He added that he will take 16 credits in the fall semester. His courses include English, Math, History, and Bible studies.
