Dr Barbara Carby has been selected to head up the soon-to-be-established National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for the Cayman Islands.
She will take up her new job on 14 August.
A disaster management specialist, Dr Carby has more than 15 years' experience in disaster planning and intervention, focusing on mitigation, policy development and hazard and environmental management.
As the first female director general of Jamaica's Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), her devotion to duty was widely recognised.
She has served in that position for the past nine years.
She was the first woman to be awarded a PhD in Geochemistry at the University of the West Indies, as well as the first recipient of a scholarship to study natural sciences in France by the French Government.
"I am delighted that we have been able to attract someone of Dr Carby's credentials to assist us at this crucial stage of setting up our own agency. With her wealth of experience, she will also serve as an excellent mentor to Mr McCleary Frederick, the Deputy Director designate, who I am confident will be able to take over the leadership of the agency in a few years", said Acting Chief Secretary and National Hurricane Committee Chairman, Donovan Ebanks.
