interestingly enough; here in n.y. i see far many more sucessful businesses being run by yardie than by any other carib group (mainly restaurants & bodegas)....the indians (trini & guyanese, esp guyanese) are big in the telecomunnications biz

That is further proof that Jamaicans are no less keen on economic growth than Trini Indians.
It is all about being kept out of the economic pie by use of law,that forbids this.
I also notice that other than me,no other porter acknowledge this blatant fact. It has been covered over by lies about blaCK MEN NOT WANTING TO WORK HARD,AND THE BLACK jAMAICANS SWALLOW IT HOOK LINE AND SINKER,ALTHOUGH MANY ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE STRUGGLE THAT BLACKS ARE FACED WITH WITH THE HIGH COLATEAL REQUIREMENTS TO EVEN GET A LOAN. hERE ONE CAN Go into a bank and get a oersonal loan with no colateral. In Jamaica that is almost impossible even from the credit unions.

You are confusing cultures without understanding the framework therefore missing the point.
Chattel houses is a product of a history where land was owned for sugar. The land in Barbados was devided among the planter class way back in history. Barbados lands are 90% private ownership.
There are virtually no crown lands with over 80% of the lands being arable and no substantial mountain ranges Barbados agrarian land use have to be converted to housing as the population grew.
Land was and remains a legacy passed down through Generations. This is true for Black Barbadians as well as white Barbadians.
This is quite unlike Jamaica where large areas of crown lands exists and the Hills and mountains present ample opportunity for capture.
Whereas in Jamaica wealth may be measured in land in Barbados wealth is measured in savings.
Barbadians by and large enjoy a living standard well above the casual observation of a chattel Home. Because ownership of land was tied up in family wills and trusts making it unlikely to be sold for generations. There exists a generational lein system where families have occupied the same address for generations without being able to purchase it even though they posess the savings to do so because the land was willed to grandchildren years ago at the death of the first owner.

Chattel houses does not in any way donote poverty as it does in Jamaica, in fact the costs of erecting a permanant structure is cheaper in that it needs less termite repair, Barbados does not have a lumber industry but does produce cement and have all the materials for concrete locally. Wood is an export item, read foreign exchange.

Living in a chattel house does not indicate poverty necessarily it in most cases mean the occupants have been promised first refusal to purchase at the death of the grandson. Untill then they save rather than erect a permanent structure on leased property.

Is it because you are not aware that sociology is the main tool of economic analysis?
Do you think that the knowledge of the phycical demography is enough to explain the differences?
"Let me tell you something" former students will know who with this quote,because it was my trademark,as a lecturer. Yes let me tell you somthing here. although the pfysical geography influences economy,the greatest influences are those done by the managers of the economy. for every geographical detail you can point to as a cause,i can show you it in many other countries without in being influential in the economy of the country. Look at the Japanese popography, it is less favourable to agriculture,yet the economic management of the country has developed tools that neutralizes the weaknesses of the terraine. It is not aboout geography. It is all about the policies put in place and the strategy used to achieve thEM.
It all goes back to the economic elite,decides that the Barnadian majority is less likely to want to sit with 'em at the economic table so they can afford to keep their monies teir. since it will not be available to other than their class.
while in Jamaica the locals are too uppity,so they put their stash out of the reach of them. So that they won't borow it from banks and use it to gain economic equality.
If eve 50 % of the monies held aborad wa sinvested in Jamaica the country would have a GDP larger than all others exept Cayman,which is for another thread. incidentally I would not be in favour of the Cayman economic policy either,because the economic handle is still not available equally to locals as it is to absentee investors.

They behave like thrift is an habit,one can just aquire it.
"Let tell you somthing". Thrift requires income. Where is the comparative income,to generate the 'thrift'?
Jamaicans can and do save.
You ever heard of "pardner".Well they use it in Jamaica to overcome the economic starvation the elies hads them under,and they used it when they migrate to other countries,to get their footing before the banks will give them the break.Jamaicans are savers. they just have to earn enough to save after they honour their domestic responsibillities.

The thrift I am speaking of is a mindset to say buy a 'new'second hand car, cash, say $10,000. Bds.

A young man living with parents would set out to save toward this goal. These savings have nothing to do with 'partner' to buy some new clothes these savings were specific and long term.

Today the trend is towards a bank loan.
Loans require no thrift just bartering of future earnings.
Look what we did with loans in the seventies and eighties.

This mentality of quick measures of sucess have dogged our economy for the las three decades as we have allocated more to loan repayments than to any other sector.

The thrift element I speak about is that Barbados in the 70's 80's and nineties forgo the expensive trappings of sucess and built an economy with low debt burdens hence able to lavish monies on social and educational development.

Call it frugal but the economic model paid of then and now.
