THE Bahamians took Scarborough by storm Saturday afternoon at the launch of CARIFESTA IX in Tobago.
With an awesome display of sheer energy and driving rhythm, the Junkanoo Performing Band literally stole the spotlight, completely captivating the crowd, during the street parade and the cultural programme that followed the formal opening ceremony at the CARIFESTA ‘village’ at the Milford Road Espla-nade in lower Scar-borough.
They continued in the same vein yesterday, Junkanoo being the watchword, at the specially organised ‘community festival’ at Buccoo, the home of Tobago’s own crab and goat races.
Addressing Satur-day’s formal opening, Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Orv-ille London ack-nowledged that “the unity of the Carib-bean cannot be achieved by us politicians.
It can only be achieved by the people!” he asserted, adding that CARIFESTA was more than just culture, and must be viewed as a reaffirmation of the whole process of binding ourselves together as a people.
