Hi all I've just returned from my first carnaval in Trinidad. Music, music, music seemed like all day and night.
Jouvert starts at 4am monday morning and lasts until about noon. Music starts again about 3 until 9. This celebration was like Caribana times ten. I wish I had discovered this when I was younger. I stayed at a guesthouse down the street from the parade so I didn't have to go far to get my groove on. Thank goodness there were bleachers for when I needed to rest. I ate and drank well and inexpensively.
I spent a day at Maracas Beach, about 30 minutes outside of town. We drove into the rain forest through trees that reminded me of the canopy of trees in jamaica. I got to try shark and bake at Richards which was delicious, it did not taste the same elsewhere. they also pickle mangos and sugar coconuts.
The waves were very rough that day so I stayed mainly on the beach. Not as nice as Negril but doable.
Trinidad is known for its chocolate, cocoa is one of there main exports along with oil...gas is 96 cents a liter. Port of Spain is a business town much activity......then there is Tobago.
I took the car-ferry over, not a bad ride at all 2 1/2 hours over movie, food, booze available and comfortable chairs. Tobago is very laid back. Mind you everyone has been drinking for days outside at the square you'll see bottles of Johnny walker Red and Rum being passed around. I didn't have transportation arranged and don't know a soul here...also my cell phone was not working because i got it wet during the parade. I have 3 full suitcases and no idea where i was going. here we go again. i throw myself on the mercy of strangers and a very nice fella named Antony helped me get a cab and loaded my suitcases in. Mr Scott ended up being my driver over the next 10 days when i wanted to go somewhere.
I stayed at the Sandy Beach Village beachfront my dream room. I was right by the ocean hearing waves crashing morning noon and night...and the STARS!!! glorious abundant stars. I was in my element this was Nirvana. After I got groceries I didn't budge for 3 days from that spot i had everything i needed right there. there was a small beach area next door at the beach club along with entertainment and a bar. there was a restaurant on the premise & a couple others on the road to Store Bay. it took me a few days to walk to the beach but walk i did. Again not as big a Negril but friendly and hustlerfree...relaxing i took many a nap there. again lots of food stands to choose from and i had a calabash designed just for me.
I enjoyed my trip to this caribbean isle but did find myself
comparing it to my familiar jamaica. Tobago is trying to build up it tourist trade but i hope thats a long time coming because i think it a best kept secret.
